jade plant wilting due to frost

Hi,
I live in denmark and I bought my jade plant in summer last year, and placed it in the east facing side outdoors. Later when the temperatures dropped sub zero deg (0 to -6°C), I moved it to my carport(about 40m2 of square shaded area with 2 walls) next to my house wall and I did not water it that much, may be once or twice in a month and it has been standing good, without any visual difference but yesterday I saw my plant all wilted and my immediate reaction was to water and move the plant indoors. it's now sitting next to the west facing window, and I opened the window a bit. the main stem of the plant is still okay but the branches have wilted and some small branches fell off while moving it. there's some liquid coming out from those fell off nodes. I am hoping that my plant has not died due to frost outdoors, can I get some advice from your experience on how to take care and if I should do anything or just let it be? really appreciate help here, hurts to see it so sad :(

It all depends on how much damage was done. You should have not watered it, let hope it was not damaged even more. There is very good probability that most branches will fall off. All the drooping ones. If the roots were not damaged (and I believe they were not - unless it was in cold for too long), many thicker (and possibly thinner too) trunk will live. But it will have to grow new branches - and that could take a while.

..."there's some liquid coming out from those fell off nodes"...that is all excess water, from the frostbite and from you watering it. If left on the plant, it COULD cause rotting - I am saying the worse that can happen, so it may not.

Branches looking same as one I circled in yellow are already dead, and probably falling off. IF MY PLANT, I would most likely cut them off:

I would check at least thicker trunks by gentle squeezing them to feel how soft they are. More soft or squishy, more a chance that it is damaged. Some could survive, some may not.

Thanks for your reply. I checked the main trunk, it's not so squishy, still hard I would say, but all the small branches are sagging more everyday and there's more liquid coming out:( would you suggest to prune the sagging branches now or let them shed off? also I placed the plant next to window right now, and I am keeping window slightly open for few hours, cz it was taken from cold weather outdoors, and I am scared to give it a temporal shock. I dunno if that makes sense, pls share your thoughts!

Rina is the Jade master, but I will butt in since she hasn’t responded because rot spreads quickly. As I’m sure you noticed☹️. Prune all the squishy stems off until you hit clean healthy flesh. No rotten flesh should be left on because it will spread. From the looks you may have to prune back a lot, but if the main trunk is not rotten it should grow back fine.

I‘ve heard of people saying their Crassula ovata‘s aka Jade can handle as low as -10C, but I definitely wouldn’t risk it. If this were mine from now on I would protect when the lows hit 0C.

Def a learning lesson🙂. Where I live Jades grow everywhere.

They’re in bloom now, here’s a little inspiration pic for you.

Kara responded, so I will not repeat. I just want to say that jades will most likely suffer some frostbite in freezing temps. They are reported to withstand as low as -1 C (about 30 F), but I wouldn't keep them in less than 2-4 C (low 30-ties F) for any extended time. I have hard time to believe they would survive -10 C (about 14 F).

Thanks a lot for you advices Rina and Kara, I really appreciate your help here!!

I have started to prune my plant, there's a lot of squishy branches and even stems that needs to go :(( but I am hoping they will come back again soon. I am done with a few, posting pictures of the process, let me know if I am doing it right, or any other suggestions that you have...

2 other things that I wanted to ask were:

    1. skin of the big stems is peeling off, anything worrisome there?
    2. the soil is still wet from the watering that I did few days back when I found it wilted, any suggestions on that? do I need to do something?

    thanks again you guys!

Hi, an update post on how the plant is looking 14hrs after the pruning. please share your observations if any.. Thankyou again!

    Hi guys,

I have been checking and slicing the plant a lot, but there seems to be more and more rot :(

I have put some photos of the cuts from this morning, which does not look fully green, would you say I need to slice more? all of them?

there are some stems, which are good but the side branches coming out of the seems to be rotten. In those cases, if I slice at the very origin of the branch is that okay or does the parent stem needs to be sliced away until that rotten branch as well?

To your question, yes the pot has a hole at the bottom, but would you recommend repotting to change the soil and prune the roots if rotten?
