Firstly, remember that blackberries aren’t really ‘bushes’. They grow on long canes which are pruned out after fruiting. The best and most space saving way of growing them is on wires where they take the least room widthwise and are easier to harvest. Even trained on wires four feet isn’t much space but might be ok if you train the canes rigorously and also keep the strawberries in their allotted space. 5 plants might be quite a lot depending on whether you can or how many are in your family.

Thank you floral_uk and Kevin. I did know that blackberries aren’t truly a bush. I apologize for not being clear on that. When I was a kid we always called them bushes because they grew wild in such tangled thickets. I had watched a video once of someone growing them along cattle panels and thought that was a great ideal, so thanks for the reminder. I do can all our fruits. My husband is diabetic, one daughter and myself are sensitive to sugar and another daughter is outright allergic to sugar. The only fruit she can eat is a little of blackberries, blueberries and raspberries. I can them sugar free and also freeze some for smoothies.

I know this somewhat varies with climate, but my advice is to get some other thornless variety,In my back yard I grow Prime Ark Travelers, Prime Ark Freedoms, Ouachitas, Osage and Sweetie Pie blackberries, by far the least flavorful are the Prime Ark Travelers, with the Osage and Swetie Pies being the 2 best, most flavorful, Sweetie Pies are the sweetest but Osage has the best complex flavor.

Thank you Ike! I’ll be on the lookout for Osage and Sweetie Pie especially then. I love to make a blackberry jam and sauce with them so something with a nice flavor is a must and since we don’t eat sugar the Sweetie Pie sounds like that would be esp helpful.
