Accessible Beige vs. Shiitake vs. Edgecomb Grey

last modified: 4 years ago

Good morning. My painter is coming tomorrow and I just can't decide which paint color to use in my great room! I'm deciding between Accessible Beige, Shiitake and Edgecomb Gray. My kitchen next to my great room is Stone Lion.

Notes to consider: Any kind of White is out of the question. I don't want to go that light. I have no gray walls in my home (everything leans more greige). Ignore the furniture placement - it is all being changed (rearranged) and my sofa and another chair are on backorder. I know a lot of other things probably need help, but I'm dealing with paint at the moment.

I appreciate your advice!

KITCHEN IN STONE LION: Changing this is not an option

You desparately need to get to your local paint store as early this morning as they open. Buy 3 samples and some foam board. Paint the samples on the foam board (not your current wall). Move them around all day to see which one you like. You will want to see different light.

With that said, all your options are fine.

Or you could use the Stone Lion again, especially if the living room is open to the kitchen.

Colors are monitors vary, and no one here will see what you actually see.

kempek01 they open at 10 and I will be there! I thought I had this figured out and chose Shiitake. Now last minute I am worried it is too dark! I do not want to cancel the painter - he is so booked and hard to schedule!

    HI @Dyan Weis,

It sounds like you are just having second thoughts then. Your initial instincts are probably right.

Offtopic, are those bean pot lamps on the end tables? I think I have the same lamps (different shades though)

Good question about the lamps. I've had these lamps for probably 25 years! I changed out the shades a few years ago. I have no idea what they are!

I suggest you go much lighter in the kitchen. Using S W , I found the lightest non white in the Stone Lion family. Although called Aesthetic White, it is not white.

White cabinets, black counters and not a ton of natural light, you kitchen should show like this photo.

Work the combination of all colors in a new rug.

For instance, any of these Dash and Albert jutes would be gorgeous in your room.

Love those rugs. Painting the kitchen is not an option. Just finished it. A designer chose that color for me based on my backsplash etc. I can see your point but just figuring out the great room now.

I think your kitchen paint color is gorgeous. It has a wonderful depth and sophisticated feel. Great choice.

Agree about getting samples. What does your designer say about those choices?

Love those lamps, too! I had some similar way back when and kick myself for giving them away!

Please update us with what you decide, your house is beautiful. :)

Love the above idea of aesthetic white. Certainly should be sampling. Show us what the samples look like.

Thank you! My designer came a couple of weeks ago and chose Shiitake to go with my kitchen. Now I am afraid it is going to be too dark and I can't get in contact with her. Maybe I will hear from her today! Off to Sherwin Williams at 10am right when they open to get some samples! Just trying to find something lighter than Shiitake that will still go with my Stone Lion. Not white.

Ok here they are! Question - wouldn’t my fireplace sort of “disappear” with the lighter colors? Top is Shiitake. Middle is Accessible Beige. Bottom is Edgecomb Grey. Thanks!

Sorry -- I have been away for a while.

None of them really contrast with your fireplace.

Did you paint right on the wall, or on white foam board?

If you painted right on the wall, the color you already have will be influencing your perceptions.

I know you're afraid of going too dark, but I like the idea of Stone Lion continuing on in.

Have you looked at SW's comparisons? Shiitake and Stone Lion are similiar colors, so you can look at it on line. I know the monitors aren't the same. Here's a link: Shiitake Sherwin WIlliams

From left to right, Stone Lion will be the second option (click on it and the room changes color). Shiitake is the one farthest to the right.

Or this might be the time I chose an accent wall. In Stone Lion...

Thank you kempek01. When I went to Sherwin Williams today, I told him that I was going to paint it on a foam board. He said with these paints I wouldn't have to? So I didn't. It gives me a good enough idea though I think. Stone Lion and Shiitake are on the same strip. That room is just so dark and I can't imagine doing Stone Lion in there. I agree with you on the accent wall though! Shiitake and Stone Lion definitely go together! More thinking to do! Appreciate your help and insight very much!

If you had put the paint on foam boards, you would have been able to move the boards around the room. The guy you talked to at SW may be great at paint, but he was wrong to deter you.

Part of the reason that your room is dark is that there is not a lot of lighting. Have you given any thought to making any changes there?

Try opening the drapes to see if that makes a difference.

One of coordinating colors for Stone Lion is Natural linen, that is closed to Accessible Beige. I would go with Accessible beige.

I did paint different parts of the room.

Tough call. Honestly I totally feel the stress. Assuming you picked one. Definitely can say to skip the top one.

Even the Shiitake appears to have a higher LRV (light reflective value) than what's currently on the walls in your great room, so if you don't think it's too dark in there now then it probably won't be too dark with Shiitake. On my monitor, I think Accessible Beige looks the best with your fireplace tile and looks like a nice, warm color that coordinates with the Stone Lion. Good luck!

Well, I chose Shiitake. I had a friend over and we contemplated it (why is this so hard for me). I have Shiitake in my entryway and my piano room. It is also on the same strip as my kitchen Stone Lion. I appreciate the advice - I was ready to be brave and use Accessible Beige but it didn't happen this time. Thanks.

I think you made the right decision. In each picture, I thought the Shitake was the best choice. Can't wait to see the reveal.

So far the Shiitake is looking pretty light! 🤞🏻

I told him he needs to paint that awful vent! :)

    Oh, yes, definitely.

I‘m excited for you! Fun project. :)

You made the right choice! It looks great and definitely is not too dark in your room. Also, I like that it's the same as your adjoining entryway (and coordinates beautifully with your kitchen).

Love it — lighter, brighter, fresh ... but still warm.

Thanks! Yes the 2002 paint was pretty awful. Furniture companies are running WAY behind so who knows when my sofa will come in.

Lovely! I wonder how Shiitake would look lightened?

Such a nice and warm looking color. Any chance you have any photos showing it without lights on and in daylight (drapes open)?

Vinnielee S - In the comments above, I have a photo of the room finished with the curtains not up yet!
