@everdebz No I don't have them, should collect. Our TV is 65 inches.

I agree some color is needed...and think it should be the fireplace wall...but not gray..the fireplace will stand out better with some color around it...and i believe it can be dramatic and subtle at the same time.... if you choose an unexpected color..like pale aqua or lavender or a peachy shade to blend with the carpet and stone colors if you are trying for a more monochromatic feel
I dont agree on shelves or cabinets..it is too expected...and it doesnt go with the clean contemporary vibe here ...big dramatic plants would be my choice ...but wall sculptures with curves and shapes could also make the squares seem more sharp and interesting as they are...also unless you have to feed 6 people everyday i would put away 2 chairs and leave the dining table with 2 chairs on each side facing each other

All I could find for curtains with upper windows.... How about pewter/nickel rods and curtains? Enough separation, and difference between LR and DR that you might not need curtains there, unless you want them. Valances in coordinating fabric [with curtains]?

I like some of the other color suggestions that someone made above so I have a few other colors here that I'm thinking could really look great.

Don’t forget you can cut out cardboard to make an arch or buy online a long piece of flexible plastic to make an arch, then tape it whereever you’d like to see what kind of arch you want, if any, and what height or how wide it should be.

Thank you all. I feel pumped with you are all helping me with this. I am grateful.

@btydrvn Do you think adding color and tall plants would be enough on the fireplace wall ?

To your point I would love to try something that’s not very expected .

Shelves and cabinets may be overwhelming to the space. I definitely want to preserve airy / open feeling.

@Cecilia Do you happen to have buying link for that book shelf?

Roopa, love that you are thinking out of the box, moving around the furniture.... good for you.... your kitchen is lovely.

I have read most of the comments and yes I think there is probably too much gray in your kitchen and in your family room. The idea of painting the fireplace wall a different color is a good idea if ur up to it. Since you're still going with that airy open feeling go with a lighter colour like even white or off-white vs something dramatic like a pale yellow which is the colour trend of the year! Another colour that is soothing is soft green or a pale blue. Those are colors that are quite comforting.

The idea of adding single chairs is also good. I would rearrange your furniture again. Just a suggestion: move the couch over to the wall side but away from the wall and closer to the outside edge of the fireplace tile/wall. Move the couch that's on the wall/ sectional to the window side and again not against the window but move it so it's more in the middle and flanks the edge of the fireplace tile edge again.

Where I would add the chairs are behind the bar seating of the kitchen island but closer to the edge of the 2 couches and leave some room to walk around and get it and out of. That will add to your open and airy experience. The floor lamps could be placed by either coach but on the side where you would put the chairs. but not where they are now. Any type of shelving, be at a unit or floating shelves to flank on either side of the fireplace wall is fine, large pieces of artwork and real or artificial plants, they're all good ideas too.

In the middle of where the couches are I would still add an 8x10 or 12x10 area rug and some sort of ottoman or coffee table in the center.

Whatever colour you choose for the accent wall those could be your accent pillow cushion colours, even a floral or geometric pattern is nice too.

Your room is big and your windows give a lot of natural light a really good size for a custom home. So keeping those large couches anchors the space really well. Have fun decorating!

Perhaps have some built-in lower cabinets and floating shelves installed?

Roopa..i definitely think color on the wall and some great plants with the fireplace feature and tv on that wall will be enough...with the added plus that plants can add life/ a natural element to the space

Personally i would go with a clear crisp color with no dark undertones..like a pale lemon yellow ( like bright sunlight)or or a clear pale aqua...( like the perfect summer sky)...nothing drab

Cabinets and shelves just invite clutter and distraction and ar usually not in scale with the high ceilings

Design is not defined by filling in all the spaces..just the opposite is many times...more striking and effective

This is my last suggestion I promise! You must be getting over whelmed. So, hang two matching extra large fabric wall hangings on a painted wall. Add some plants in there as well to add color and life. :)

Thank you. Color , wall art and plants it is then !

I "might" add wall shelf (something like these) on one side after I attempt to decor with plants.

Taller ...dramatic...sculptural plants...like palms would be a good place to start...i would wait til you have a furniture plan in place...focusing on an arrangement that is balanced ...if possible ...to complete the plan for symmetry...remembering too little is better than too much...leave the possible addition of a shelf unit until last as a perfect place may be more apparent on another wall ....at that point...another design trick is to pull the furnishings away from the walls a little...oddly enough it makes the room feel bigger..more “airy”...makes the tall lamps feel less cramped as well

I saw your post about open and airy. Your floor lamps are a sign - since they look so small in comparison to "grand heights," other items, though wider/fuller like a large plant - they might also seem tiny.

A block of contrast won't remove openness, won't block... but it could create a 'vibe' that isn't there, yet.

Just thought - stationery curtains can contribute to, by nature of the fabric, an airy feeling.

One more observation/thought. Is the TV covering the mantle? If so, might consider raising it, to show that detail!:)

Yes. Unfortunately we had to cover the mantle to accommodate proper viewing angle of the TV.

    @User

I tried your furniture placement suggestion and am loving it ! Thanks a ton.

I am now in search of a rug that could go here. Hardest decision for me now is to decide on color of the fireplace wall.

What do you think of the rugs below ?

    https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/mistana-osias-bluebeigeorange-area-rug-w000773451.html?piid=1046283471

    https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/bungalow-rose-arteaga-oriental-blueorange-area-rug-w002852820.html?piid=755666946

The color I choose for the fireplace wall might also play a role in choosing rug....still deciding on color.

I adore those rugs!! The second is my fav. I also love the new furniture placement.

Looking good Roopa...you are on the right track. I took decorating courses through an accredited college and this is one option in placing furniture to hug or focus on focal point in room and yours is the fireplace.

I really like the Arteaga blue/orange area rug.... has a Bohemian flair to it. I also notice the colour scheme. It has gray which is already in the room, yellow and it is hard to see but is it white or off white? Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get some paint colour samples.... pale yellow or off white might just do the trick. You don't want that accent wall to overpower the room too much. Everything should blend in well in just the right places. And whatever colour you choose for the wall, make sure you use another colour from that area rug to pull it in and tie it together for pillow accents. Then access the other empty spaces in the room by adding plants or artwork. Do that last because after you painted the accent wall and add pillows it might be enough. During the day, open up the blinds and let the natural light cascade in from the windows and I bet your room will look very inviting!

I would put one of those floor lamps on the opposite side of the sofa on the window side. You have three take one away, just use 2. Take a picture and post it and I will take a look at it tomorrow

The television's width tends to make the fireplace look a bit dinky. I'd suggest accessorizing on either side of the fireplace with something that helps trick your eye into seeing the fireplace and the television as being approximately the same width. You could do this with plants, fireplace tools... anything that fills in the space to either side of the fireplace and is about the same height as the top of the fireplace.

I like the furniture placement you show in the post above but I have a lighting suggestion. Those upper windows probably look great in the daytime with light streaming through, but at night they become big black boxes. If you were to replace the two floor lamps on either side of the fireplace with some larger ceiling-mounted swag lamps, you'd get a warm glow instead. You could find something curvy to break up all the straight lines... something like this maybe? https://www.stylishdirect.com/products/plug-in-1-light-vintage-rattan-bell-pendant?variant=33544707997793&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=bing&utm_campaign=Bing%20Shopping&msclkid=defdd1b231d711c34824b19bf5270ac2#images-1 As an additional benefit, that would put the light up above the television, which would reduce reflections on your screen.

Funny about camera angles - to my eyes I imagined very short floor lamps? The layout helps, but the photo shows lamps regular... !

I haven't read if you have glare/ light issues.

No glare issues so far . We have to get electrical work done to fix ceiling lights though.

If you bring bright colors into the room using a brightly colored rug, I think you will need to have real punch in whatever you decide to have on either side of the fireplac.e. Neither good nor bad. Up to you. A quieter rug gives you the option of going low key on the walls.

it is good to see a photo with the tv on. Were it me, I would want to tamp down any competition for the eye between letting the eye zero in on the tv and being able to easily ignore what else might be in same field of vision to the left or right . Think of the tv like a movie screen in a picture palace.

You are on the right path!....if the couch ends are the same i might switch them so the ends on the kitchen side match...pick a rug that YOU love..love..love....focusing on getting some color ...and use that for the inspiration for the accent wall...the lamps can now go a little closer to the furniture...

I agree. Rug must be one you love! And I really like the ones you showed us too!

Since your space is more industrial/contemporary, i would choose an elegant but more traditional rug...for that little unexpected highlight...but still “homey” feel

    Roopa K thanked btydrvn

It looks like your couches are a sectional. You might try the sectional with one back on the window side. The other side would face the fireplace. Then move the TV to the wall opposite the windows on a TV stand. Then a nice picture over the fireplace. I agree that some curtain panels with add so color and warmth.

Polypropylene is not advisable for quality or endurance ...wool will be thicker...heavier...better over carpeting...and last much longer...

It is very pretty! You will definitely be bringing some color in with that one. ;)

    last modified: 4 years ago

I like your rug and when it arrives if you worry it is too bright, bring bright colors into the room like towels or clothes, and see if getting new sofa pillows in bright colors makes the rug work in the room overall

Look like your rug would look really pretty with a very light gold cream accent wall or probably an aqua blue.

    Or this one

    Roopa K thanked Cecilia

Roopa if you bought that oriental rug with the bright red and the aqua background, I would go with a pale aqua or pale blue wall. Off white, pale yellow or cream works very well too. It's the daytime light with all the beautiful windows you have to feel airy during the day and a pleasing wall color to look at night and enjoy, not overpowering!
