Partridge pea seeds

Have an old packet of these that I never got around to sowing, but I'd like to do that this year. Can I just scatter them about at the back of the property in early spring, or do they need anything more than that?

Prairie Monn says C10 so they need only ten days of cold, moist stratification. You can sow them at a time when you know they will get that outside. Legume seeds are better sown when young because they lose viability faster. Same with Apiaceae seeds. They'll probably still germinate. Let me guess, they came as freebies in a Prairie Moon seed order? They are like Verbena bonariensis, once you plant them, you'll always have them. There's also a Sensative Partridge Pea , Chamaecrista nictitans. I want seeds for those. I really love watching and listening to all the bumblebees on my Partridge Peas.

I planted some (also from Prairie Moon) a couple years ago, in a sunny bed. As I recall, I presoaked/nicked some, and left others untreated. No stratification. Didn’t seem to matter. They took a while to get going, but there were masses of them eventually.

To Jay’s point, I had even more last year, all self-seeded. I believe they came up a little earlier on their own — maybe the effect of stratification?

Pea gravel would work, but can be easily disturbed when cleaning up the debris from the trees. I recommend using large, irregular blue stone slabs to lay the patio. These stones can be set directly on soil instead of having to excavate and lay a stone base. They also are very easily re-leveled after any movement due to tree roots or soil shifting. This type of patio will give you a natural clean living space without disturbing the existing tree roots or having to deal with an extensive install process. Also, Mondo grass or another groundcover can be used to plant in-between the stones for added appeal.

I think Nancy Walton is on the right path there. I usually recommend lawn only in selected ares for children or pets to play, or as a bit of open space in between plantings. There are so many other more beautiful, low maintenance plants and material options out there that will use much less water and time/work than lawn, and provide for wildlife like hummingbirds and butterflies, and add lots of great form and color to your outdoor space. Not sure about Arizona Natives, but there are many trees here in California that will die if they have lawn sprinklers beneath them. I think it would be really good to do whatever you can to preserve and accent those great trees you have there. They really make the space already. Well...here are some of my flower beds. Along the fence line are lots of different types and colors of lilies. In between them are bluebells. Right now it's just all greens but I'm seeing little buds down in there. Out from the fence a bit I have a Wisteria & several rose bushes & peonies. Under my shade tree are the hostas & that greenish/whitish stuff is the patchmaster. Hopefully I can get some grass in there! This last pic, I still need to do some weeding outside the wood border, but right now it's just not a huge priority! Slow but sure it's getting there....

Inoculation of the seed should help. Also, prepare your soil well and check that you are growing them in the right conditions. About every three years you should change the location of planting, they can deplete soil easily. They only need a food suitable for tomatoes actually, and that only after their first few blooms appear. Avoid feeding with high nitrogen food. Make sure they are watered adequately, and avoid any competition for their root development.

==>>> sure why not ... the only downside is.. will you recognize them when the sprout.. or will you end up weeding them out in some frenzy of weed killing.. lol ..

i would take 4 sticks found in the lawn ... and stick them in the ground.. and sprinkle the seeds within said defined area.. so if they do sprout.. you might think.. hey.. there are those sticks.. didnt i throw something down there.. and then when you focus and see a bunch of tiny babes that seem to look pea-ish.. just maybe.. you will remember what you threw down there .. or at least think.. hey.. i had some evil plan ... may as well wait and see what develops.. lol ...

i know it not precisely the question you asked.. but its a secondary consideration ...

HAHA yea, good point -- it would be DH tooling along on the tractor not paying any attention when he's cutting the grass in the pasture. Some stakes and caution tape should take care of that.

Yep, they were free Prairie Moon seeds.
