What light fixture(s) would look good?
Comments (24)Thank you Leslie for the ego boost. Although I have worked as a designer in the past, I don't do it now professionaly. I have being doing it, in some form, all my life. Both of my parents loved design and we lived all over the world... moving... and moving furniture. It is in my blood. In fact hoping to move to Europe again soon from NYC. Been here over 20 years and getting restless. I also have always been around a global esthetic and lots of antiques so I feel every house should have the character of something old in it. I sold antiques for a while until a few years ago. Need anything??? My house is full of stuff from that shop that I need to get rid of. I just discovered the "Discussions" here a few days ago, so I have had a blast sticking my nose into other peoples business and giving them my two cents. It is an easy way to scratch the design itch without lifting anything. Your kitchen looks beautiful. Love the colour of your cabinets. Your right, can't see the backsplash details but it looks to have a great texture. Is the pinky tone accurate? Pretty, and works nicely with the sort of "cafe au lait" of the cabinets. I can see why you love it. Did that sound like I may not like pink? Not so... it is one of my "neurtrals". And so darn clean! How do you do that? Since you have done so much of the difficult big stuff, I think you should express the quirkier side of your personality now... the house needs it... at least a little bit. I have only been to Toronto once, but I found some interesting areas to poke around; an old hippie section (my era), a nice little Chinatown and there must be lots of antique shops. I even found a place that sold old saris, which are great for inspiration. I tell everyone to roam those places to see what excites them. Bring a piece or two home. It will transform your space. Loving clean lines and nature's influence, you might do well with some oriental additions. Have you thought in that direction? I can go on, can't I? Anyway, so glad making your home has been fun for you, as it should be. If I can help in any way, it would be fun for me to continue the conversation. Comments (39)Okay, so basically what I'm seeing is a room for children... With skylights (not good for kids who go to bed early, or sleep in), light rugs (my room's carpet is FILLED with stains and it's dark brown... What a terrible mess that would make!), if you want to read, basically get your own light because no individual lights, and then finally; I'm 14 and I know I would hate to have a little kid pink frilly room or freakin' little kids tables and stuff. Once your kids hit like 11; all new furniture and paint colors. I don't know. I would stick to like a neutral vintage blue, mint green, or something that older and younger would like. And then a dark wood color or dark carpet. Wood is easy to clean spills up so lower maintenance. Oh! And cover up those skylights! I love sleeping in, and with those over my face I would kill someone! :) have fun decorating guys! :)...See MoreWhy should we use antique lights?
Comments (3)Beautiful pieces and great writing. I have to say, though, that the good pieces that survive are the well crafted ones installed in protected locations. Serviceable quality pieces were made way back when, too, as they are today, but many, perhaps most, have not survived normal wear and tear. Professional rewiring of an antique, many-bulb fixture can cost more than most people can afford. Stripping, replating, and applying new clear protective finishes adds to the cost. For showpiece fixtures, it is worth the cost to some people. For workaday vintage fixtures, maybe not. Our local consignment shops display once-popular, now tarnished crystal chandeliers that no one wants to rewire and replate. The most common vintage lights in my area are table lamps outfitted with new cords, new sockets, and new shades. It's the shades that drive up the cost, and sending out a shade to be fitted with new fabric is nearly unknown....See MorePOLL: Which kitchen style is your favorite?
Comments (157)Too funny, both the traditional and contemporary were my least favorites but they were the most popular. They are too decorative for my taste. If the country kitchen were truly "country" than it might have been my favorite but the photo looks too "faux country" to me. By far my favorite was the industrial kitchen. Is it a bit too slick to be industrial? Still, "Form follows Function". I could think more clearly in that kitchen....See Moremtnrdredux_gw
