Where to add art?

Good morning!

Looking for suggestions where to add art in our open living/dining room. Don’t want to overwhelm the space.

Hi @ks92,

You have some very nice pieces in your space! Obviously there are a million directions you can go with artwork. I might narrow it down to three main locations to simplify things.
- I would look at making a statement behind the head of the dining table with a big and bold piece of art there. Keep the proportions similar to the wall - more tall than wide. I like an eye-catching piece there because it will pull attention all the way from the other end of the living room, helping to unify the spaces.
- On the adjacent wall behind the dining table, I would look for something more textural than colorful. The color could all but blend into the wall. Possibly a painted wood piece or fiber art just to break up the expanse of wall.
- To keep things simple and not-too-overwhelming, I would look to balance the visual weight of the floor lamp on the right side of the TV. You might do that with vertical art or a mirror, but something free-standing like a small tree or a sculpture would add even more interest.
Hope that gives you some ideas!

I'd go with a tall upholstered headboard in a great patterned fabric. You can make one yourself and it isn't very hard or expensive. Get 1/2" or 1/4" plywood from your nearest home improvement store. Most of them will even cut it to your desired dimensions. Then cover it in foam (you can even use that mattress topper foam), then batting, then your fabric. You can even finish the edges with nailhead trim which looks great and adds sparkle. And voila! Art and functional headboard all at once! Good luck!

to the know-it-all "PRO" with no time to lose: if its difficult and so time consuming for you to offer your "professional" advice, then maybe you should take your busy ass somewhere the F else. there are plenty of people, designers and PROs who dont mind giving advice and clearing issues up even if it takes time and effort. you've got to have more patience with clients than that. seriously. i think its rude as hell to act like we are just DYING for your "knowledge". it is nothing new. honestly.

I would put the love seat on the opposite side of the sofa, with its back to the kitchen. Its position in front of the window is odd. You will need a couple of occasional tables to hold lamps for more general lighting since the sconces only light up/down the walls. Removing the chair rail will give the room a more modern look, and framed art on the walls will give you more color. If there is a predominant color in the art you choose, you can play up that color with a rug (longer than the sofa and wider than the love seat so that at least the front legs of both pieces will be upon the rug.
