Hard, hard, no as well. Walnut is too precious and gorgeous to paint. They don’t need a thing! Walnut wood cabinets are a huge hot trend right now. Black, gray, or green, natural slate or quartzite, would be stunning with those!

I love the warmth of the walnut cabinets too! Maybe change the backsplash to something lighter and bigger tile/slab to contrast with the wood?

NOOOOOOOOOO! The walnut is beautiful. It isn’t stained that color. That IS its color. Are you saying that it needs to be refinished? That is not the same thing. Natural wood kitchens are coming back into vogue. You would be cutting edge on trend (if that matters) to keep them natural. What you should consider is a change to counter top, or to hardware, or to backsplash. NOT those gorgeous cabinets.

Can you post a better picture? It looks like you have some scroll detail on your hood cabinet? Are you trying to simplify the style, or just change the floors...and the cabinet finish is not matching the vision?

Walnut is a very valuable and gorgeous wood. No way should you destroy tens of thousands of dollars of value in your home. There are other ways of getting a lighter kitchen. Such as actual lighting.

NO!! When people post "should i paint my cabinets" questions, it's usually because they have 80s/90s/00s ugly orange or espresso cabinets. Yours are gorgeous, and conveniently totally back in style.

Your counter is also really nice and simple. If you were going to change anything, it would be the backsplash (the tiny tiles are not well favored at this point), but even the backsplash isn't bad.

Here is a better picture of the whole kitchen and our ugly brown tile I want to replace. The cabinets don’t necessarily need to be all re-stained, just touched up where the stain has worn off. I wasn’t sure if I should stain them a different color while we are doing that? Also, like I said, I’m trying to match a hardwood floor to these cabinets. Please help!

I would try to complement the woods of the cabinets and floor instead of match them. Oak and Walnut, when stained the same color, do not always play nice together. They tend to look a bit muddy. Consider going a few shades lighter or darker for your floor.

You don't have to "match" the hardwood floors to the cabinets -- just don't use a clashing tone.

Google has a lot of pictures that show walnut cabinets combined with wood (lighter) flooring. Just don't have them blend together. I wonder if your changed your backsplash to a larger scale, solid color tile...it would take one more element out of the struggle for attention. Your cabinets are beautiful, but adding wood flooring will make it all too much.

Agree with all - your cabinets are beautiful but a bit oppressive for the uppers - I suggest taking them down on the stove side, when budget allows nice new countertop and full slab backsplash, new floors, hardware. Suggest looking at Devol kitchen pics for inso

While I love deVOL kitchens, there is nothing in this kitchen that is deVOL-esque — not one single element.

Would this flooring look ok with them if I left them? It’s what I really want, but not sure about it with walnut. but not sure about any wood floor with walnut.

IMO wood floors look good with pretty much anything -- just don't clash the tones. If you match the floors to the cabinets yes it will be visually heavy, but a lighter stain in a corresponding tone will look great and not be "too much" wood. Not at all.

Re: devol inspo suggestion - to clarify, true your style is not British cottage - but it may be helpful to look at pics with less upper cabinets such as devol

That kitchen is stunning and needs nothing. If you have to change floors, then a quiet stone would be my number one choice. Your floor should be lighter or darker and not so busy. A oak with no knots. Maple. Pick up some of the beautiful gold tones in the walnut.

@Amber Marshall: I’m not sure if this has already been suggested upthread or not so forgive me if it has, but, have you considered replacing the tile floor with another tile floor such as limestone or slate?

The flooring for the kitchen will extend through the foyer, dining and living area, as it is an open concept. That’s why I prefer the wood flooring instead of stone.

If you decide to paint those cabinets, I am going to track down your address and come steal them from you! LOL!
