can’t decide to keep granite

Looking to remodel kitchen on a budget. (Isn’t everyone) haha. I have very nice granite and would like to keep (if possible). We will be painting the cabinets and replacing backsplash and floor. What do ya’all think? I would like to go more modern. Eventually we will be replacing the wood floors in the dining room.

That granite is stunning! Of course you can keep it. I would not paint the cabinets though. The wood is also terrific. I’d concentrate efforts towards the floor, the backsplash, and better lighting. Good luck!

When you say "more modern"...do you really mean modern, or updated? Your cabinet door style combined with that granite will never read modern, BUT your granite is beautiful.

Maria, vertical ledgers need to be, well, vertical. I'm not sure your space is not wide enough for them. Plus, they are for a more rustic fireplace. But, I found a photo with plain black granite around the firebox, to show you what yours could look like. It could work really well with the black and white hearth you already have, perfect actually, especially with your fabulous kitchen! Plus here are some others with tiles to show you what a softer appearance could look like. The green/beige tiles are NOT meant to show you color, just size! @midmodfan makes an excellent point. If there will be women using the marble counterspace, virutally all make-up and grooming products - powders, BB, mascara, lotions, hairspray, liquid foundation, deodorant, etc. - will mar the surface, no matter how careful you are or well sealed you think it is. Learned this is hard way, would never put marble on a master bath counter surface again.

Can't decide on a backsplash with a busy granite

In my opinion, if you choose a "busy" countertop you cannot have any kind of pattern on the wall. Even trying to be simple by putting one-color subway tile is too much as there IS a pattern with the grout lines that fight with the countertop. If you have to have busy tops, I think you should have the backsplash with same countertop and leave the walls painted one color. This whole need to put backsplash and tile up the walls is expensive and unnecessary. Be a leader not a follower.

I had light granite in one of my former homes and got a red wine ring on it. Called my stone guy and he told me to make a paste of baking soda and water and leave it on the ring for a few hours. I did it and went to bed. When i wiped it off next morning there was no ring. After that i never worried about it. Anytime i got any type of stain which was rare if at all i did the baking sofa thing and it lifted.

You have a beautiful, spacious traditional kitchen. I suspect the rest of the house is equally traditional in style? The style of the backsplash and flooring is a bit dated, so I can see replacing them, although I'm not sure how budget friendly that will be. Keep the granite but don't paint those beautiful cabinets.

Thanks for your opinions. Really appreciate them. I guess I’m looking to update more than going modern. I agree to keep the granite. Maybe we should start with the floor and backsplash and lighting . Thanks again !

The floor is the worst offender. Start with that for sure.

The granite and cabinets seem made for each other. Together, they can be a great foundation for a refreshed kitchen.

Another vote for the same. A dark backsplash would be striking and would modernize it, depending on the floor you decide to go with.

That granite is a SHOW STOPPER. Gorgeous. I love @K R's idea of a dark backsplash.

Once those floors are updated that granite will be the star of your space.

Replace floors and backsplash. KEEP that beautiful granite, and don’t paint the cabinets. The wood is lovely and current. The granite is not that speckled kind that reads so 80s and 90s. The veining is very 2021 and it complements your cabinets beautifully!

I agree with the majority - keep the granite and the cabinets (don't paint them), lose the floor and backsplash. Add hardware and paint. Done!

I agree. Keep the cabinets and countertops, and change out the floor and back splash.

I also agree with most everyone! Keep the beautiful cabinets and gorgeous countertops and change the floor to something lighter. The present color is competing against the cabinets and countertops and I suggest an off white or creamy color--Stay away from more brown. Same with the backsplash!

Not sure how to vote on this. It's a yes/no question, correct? Keep or remove granite? But then both pics have the granite in them..?

I actually like the cabinets and would not paint them and consider replacing the counters.
