And another weird question - regarding yoga skorts

Is this for real - do people really do yoga in a skort? Or does "yoga" now mean elastic waist, knit clothing item (not to be confused with your mother's elastic waist/stretch pants). I love skorts and they're especially great for golf but I cannot imagine wearing a skort for yoga. I'm often in the dark though - waiting to be enlightened by all of you.

I wouldn't do yoga in a skort, but a skort that is as comfortable as yoga pants sounds like a nice alternative to shorts.

    Where did you see these?

Yes - perfect alternative to shorts. I haven't worn shorts in years since I discovered the skort. Talbots now refers to their skorts as "yoga" skorts. I've purchased a few from them in the past and I don't recall them being yoga skorts at that time. In their latest catalog they show the model with a yoga skort holding a tennis racket/ball. Pardon me but I think this is too dumb for words - calling the garment a yoga skort.

Meh, just trying to broaden the appeal.

I love yoga pants, but I don't do yoga in them. I've never seen a yoga skort. I can imagine they would be good for golf. I've never worn a skort!

Pardon me but I think this is too dumb for words - Haha! This made me laugh! YOU ARE PARDONED!!

That’s funny. I have never seen anyone wear a skort in any yoga class I’ve attended. However, I did of course look it up, and it’s kind of cute. I’d wear it but not for yoga.

Okay - I am now completely convinced "yoga" is a marketing term to describe comfortable, elastic wait garments that will make you think they're the greatest thing and not realize they are the equivalent to your mother's elastic waist/stretch pants that you wouldn't be caught dead wearing. I've thought this for a while but the yoga skort pushed me over the edge.

I agree, 3katz. I think it’s meant to be more mass appeal than to be something remotely practical. There are too many downward positions in yoga for anything resembling a skirt to be practical, skort or otherwise. I for one wouldn’t want anything flopping over my behind.

I usually wear tights, sometimes a slightly more loose pant, almost like what is now called a jogger, or capri length tights in summer. This is for Pilates or yoga.

Ok, I had to look one up and see what they look like. Not for me. I don't really get the combo. But I have to disagree that yoga pants and even the Talbots skort is the equivalent to our mother's elastic waist/stretch pants. They are not the turned under tunnel that holds a piece of elastic. The "band" on yoga pants is quite often wide and helps hold you in. I do wear them in sporty or very casual activities but they can be nice looking/fitting. For yoga or other exercise, I would do legging type pants, especially the capri length. I often walk in the capri length with a longish tee or tank depending on weather.

I had a skort that I danced in, and I loved it for warm times!!! Sadly, it just falls off now, and it is no longer available. I always thought a yoga skirt was like a dance wrap....it makes you presentable going in and out of class.

Can you post a link or picture of the "yoga skort"? My Pilates instructor wore a 2 in 1 capri like the Athleta one posted above. I would not want to wear anything other than leggings to do yoga. A golf skort is a another animal. I wear golf skorts even though I don't golf.

Similar to Rory, I wear tennis skorts all the time. This decrepit old body hasn't set foot on a tennis court in a very long time....but the athletic skorts are very comfortable and look nicer than shorts, IMO. However no I would not do yoga in them.

Tina, read this 2018 article from the NYT. I'm in my yoga pants now but wish they came in more colors.

Why yoga pants are bad for women

Skorts are nice but for me I'd have to have a pefectly slim body. It's because of the style of looking more like a short or mini skirt.

I don't really get the skirted leggings at Athleta, but I think the yoga skorts look pretty comfy. The last several years I much prefer a sporty skirt to shorts for just about anything I do in warm weather.

Surely they should be called golf skorts or tennis skorts since that’s an activity you would do in the garment. Even if you never play golf or tennis in the skort at least you could/would if you engaged in that activity.

I have on a pair of the Lands End cropped "Starfish" pants right now. I love them. They also have the wide (flat) band at the top. I have some in the regular length also (the slim leg). They are so comfortable.

I wear athletic leggings with a short overskirt for yoga but I'd never wear just a skort. I also wear them on my walks, hikes and to physical therapy.

I have the athleta version but the skirt is too narrow and rides up. I have other versions with skirts that are a bit more flowy which I prefer.

Re the article on yoga pants, I have worn knit pants with wider legs doing yoga, but I find leggings more comfortable as they give me more support, and the legs don't flop when I'm doing upside down things.

I think I've tried on skorts but never been happy. I'd wear skirts when it's hot so I don't mind bare legs so much, but the shorts underneath add an extra layer so make it hotter. Plus the extra layer adds extra bulk which is something my hips don't need. I've been happier with cotton knit dresses which I wear with pettipants for that more secure feeling...allows me to turn any dress/skirt into a "skort".

I’ve been wearing Eileen Fisher skirted leggings for years. Not necessarily for yoga.

And I wear Eileen Fisher knit pants, slim, not tight legs. Maybe they’re old lady? Also have similar in Theory, I love them and don’t feel they are just for grannys, tho I am one!

    Here you go.

I do barre, not yoga, but if I’m in a class, I prefer long, fitted tights. Now I am doing barre at home bc it’s part of the Peloton class line up so I can wear whatever I want!😂

I do pretty much spend my entire summer in Lilly skorts...although to be fair, they really look like skirts...they just have a lining that is fashioned into shorts. They are short, so it’s wise. 😂 I think they are sooooo much more flattering than shorts on me. (I have short legs and shorts tend to make them look shorter.) Plus, they are just really cute with all the prints and stuff.

@martinca_gw sunset zone 24 leggings and/or slim pants are not your grannie's pants! I'm sure you look very up-to-date!

I had to google "pettipants". I. can't. even.

Those are basically golf or tennis skorts. I suspect that they call them "yoga skorts" due to the fact that everyone now refers to any stretchy pants as "yoga pants". Since I don't golf or play tennis I never used to look for clothing in those departments before. Then I found a cute skort on a sale rack at Dick's (that name just kills me) and it was a golf skort. Now I always look in the golf section for skorts.

Thanks ,Tina Marie. :). These are very like MY mother‘s pants from the 70’s, and my going out, nicer bottoms today!

There are also many cultural and religious traditions in the US that appreciate things like the leggings/skirt combo, usually for a modesty thing. (The skort? Probably not!)

Used to know a lady who belonged to one of the charismatic churches who always wore a skirt over her jeans...often hiked up around her midsection because she rode horses.

Hahaha Tina Marie...love your reaction to pettipants!

Don't knock 'em until you try 'em!

@Rory (Zone 6) - oh yes women's golf clothes are great! I just started playing golf a couple years ago and I tell myself I need to stick with it because I love the clothes! Golf can be frustrating especially when you're just learning - the clothes keep me going back for more punishment.

I had to look up pettipants too though I had a pretty good idea what they were. I guess skorts have built in pettipants though maybe more form fitting which is important when you bend over in a short skirt/skort and you do a lot of that when playing golf.

Annie, I'm just surprised people really wear them! I'm not big on skirts and dresses, and when I do wear them, I'm not playing golf, doing yoga, etc. so I don't worry about someone seeing up my dress/skirt. But just in case they do, I wear nice undies in nude or black, that cover me. I wouldn't get in an uproar if someone happened to see my undies.

For some reason this conversation has made me think of a gal at my church. Attractive lady and she has a nicely curved behind. She somewhat dresses to accent it. I don't know how many time I have sat behind her and when we stand, all I can see if the outline of her thong! LOL

Now I want some golf clothes, and I don't even play golf. LOL

The tennis skorts I wear basically have built in underwear. I don't wear underwear under the attached short. That would be bulky.

All I can tell you is that I look better in skorts that shorts. The stretchy athletic fabric holds at least some of the fat in, especially the ones with the nice wide waistband like a yoga pant has. I need all the fat-holding power garments can provide! :)

    Golf clothes really are darling.

I can’t find them easily anymore, but I still have some running shorts, I think made by Brooks Running, that were the most comfortable running bottoms I owned. I had 4 pair I wore in rotation, all different colors. I bought some other brands in different fun patterns too, but the solid color Brooks were the best. I also have several longer length skirts I wear in summer for trips to the grocery, etc. Most come from either Athleta, Title 9, or Eddie Bauer because they make longer lengths. All have fabric with Lycra and are very comfortable.

@patriceny - I too think I look a lot better in skorts than I do in shorts. I think the skort has a nice flow that doesn’t emphasize my behind in the way shorts do. Same with skirts and I have a few of those that I wear in the summer too along with casual dresses - just no shorts.

Pettiepants are made to take the place of a slip under a light-weight dress or skirt through which one might otherwise see more than one might care to show.

The fact that it has legs, rather than a regular slip which does not, is nice in the summer as, like shorts, it keeps one's thighs from uncomfortably rubbing together.

@3katz4me I wear shorts but they must be a certain style and length. Just a bit above my knees. But I generally wear them outside in the yard or walking, at the lake, etc. not out and about for all to see LOL.

I googled the pettipants and see why someone might wear them, but not something I would need/want.
