Can I add 2 DIFFERENT chairs or do I need to buy 4 new chairs?

4 years ago

I have this room with 2 leather club chairs. I want to repurpose this room and make it like a cozy conversation area for 4 people with 4 chairs facing each other. ( I'd put a rug in the middle and a small table as well, etc. etc.)

My problem is I can no longer get matching chairs to go with my current chairs. Would it look tacky if I found 2 other chairs and tried to coordinate? Like similar chairs but different color? Or leather wing back chairs? Or. something like a set similar to this leather and wood chair I posted in a photo below?

And, IF I "could" get away with this.... would you position the 2 different sets of chairs together in groups or opposite each other (as example with green chairs for ILLUSTRATION purposes only)

    I think you can get 2 different chairs, but this room seems too small for that configuration.

    Would you consider a parallel configuration with 2 sets of chairs facing 2 sets of chairs? Or better.....2 chairs facing a sofa?

    I think the room would look better on the whole with the two chairs and a smallish leather sofa across from them.

    Absolutely you can use 2 different chairs and I really like the one you posted. Is it comfortabl?

    I might look for a square wood or lea topped coffee table that had room to slip 4 poufs under it. Great room for fun floor lamps

    I like the new chairs you are considering with your others I would not do kilim or juts in that space with those cahirs but maybe look for a great deal on a traditional persian rug and a round coffee table . IMO go for that old library look and I would for sure do drapes not blinds and remove what looks like a fake plant too. You will need to add some lighting for sure if there are no pot lights and just try for the ambiance of a library you are almost there .

    I wouldn’t. I agree with Ida. I would do a love seat.

    Why would anyone feel the need to dispute another commentator’s suggestions?. Any idea?

    Guess I’ll play along.

    I would not invest in a Persian rug ( a vintage rug would run into thousands) and turn the room into a dark library, with heavy drapes, stripping the room of wonderful natural light;

    Just a quick comment on jute rugs ... if you have a dog, make sure they aren't going to chew on it ... it's not good for them. We had to replace a jute rug because our pup wanted to chew up the fringe. The vet said that could be dangerous (more so than a cotton or wool fringe, which she shouldn't be chewing either but with less consequence); we chose a new rug. I also didn't love the feel under bare feet, but that's me.

    What vet do you use? Animal Hospital of Orleans is our choice and we love The Chatham Dog Club for training and day care/play.

    What a gorgeous bookcase! Love the idea of a conversation area in a room like yours. Not a pro but there seems to be space for 4 chairs. I'd aim for something similarly-scaled as your leather chairs. Here's a blog post guide I just found about mixing and matching seating. The tips of matching back height and seat depth or two other attributes make sense to me. Perhaps you'll find them helpful as well.

    You can do 2 sets of different chairs, or all 4 the same. It's up to you. We just recommend you make sure they go well with the 2 you already have.
