70s Half-brick Ranch, Curb Appeal Needed!

We have a 70s ranch in need of siding, windows and doors. We'll likely keep the brick unpainted, but I'm unsure of what siding color will complement it best.

We also have a side garage (left side of photo) that will stay as-is until the budget allows us to update that.

Any suggestions on siding materials or colors?

What style are you after? I’d say either navy or white. Really cute home!!

Thanks, I like more traditional homes or craftsman. We have some swatches, but nothing really stood out. I kind of like the white idea!

That brick is very demanding. Choosing a bold blue siding atop it would look very busy.(and quite frankly, not good)

This issue is, your bricks are very warm toned. The blues are cool toned. they don't mesh well next to each other.

either embrace the brick colors and find a complimentary color to it, or paint the brick and do your blue.

I'd love to see a dark siding color w/a lighter trim. I think that would look great.

this one is for red brick, but you get the idea

or do the dark trim and lighter siding

I know you already have a tan siding color. go darker. or do a ivory cream siding w/the iron ore trim color.

any way to paint the trim around the windows? those bright white windows against the dark brick poses another issue.

(I know you said no to painting the brick, but you really should look into Romabio IF you want to go w/cooler toned siding colors)

    It's not a paint.

comes in a masonry flat too. a more solid coverage than the lime wash

dark brick w/dark siding (board and batten)

Thanks Beth!! I actually have that Urbane Bronze color on the doors already. I was hoping to find a finished siding that color, but haven't been able to find anything dark and warm toned. The cedar we have in the front is in very bad shape and needs to be replaced. so it might be an option to replace that - paint it urbane bronze, then have a different material on the sides and back.

Also I should note, my hope is that in a few years landscaping (hydrangea and green bushes) will grow enough to cover up some of the brick. It's too busy and textured for me. The paint/limewash could be an option, but we intend to stay here a very long time and I don't want to rush into anything. If anything, I'd rather remove the brick entirely since it doesn't add much for me.

When we replace the windows I was going to go with white trim again with a wider profile.

I'd use white or taupe for the siding. You can also get a lot of curb appeal by widening your front porch area and adding some landscaping.

Katie, if you really don't care for the brick, then the Romabio would be a great option for you.

Did you know that the lime wash (the Classico) is removable in the first 72 hours? You could try it out on one side just to see if you like it. If not, hose it off!

The Masonry Flat is permanent. acts more like a paint but it's the mineral base so it allows the brick to breathe.

Before and after w/the Romabio. looks great

Even if you plan on 'covering' most of the brick, (which really isn't that great of an idea) the warm tones are still going to show. I just think doing any type of blue siding on top of it won't look right.

If you 'paint' the brick the same white as the windows, and then do the blue siding, you'll have a completely different looking home!

I'd sample the romabio on the back or side and try out some sample paints above it, just to see if you like it. If your plan is to remove the brick anyway, I don't see what you have to lose.

You could paint your brick the anonymous color, Urbane bronze on the siding, you could do a nice blue door

Or, do the Riverway on the siding, paint the brick a soft white, and urbane bronze on the trim.

White Heron brick, and any of these blues on the siding. darker blue on the door

I love these blues. They will all work w/the brown roof too. (when it's time for a roof redo, choose a medium charcoal gray)

BTW, doing some type of pathway to the front door, landscaping, flower beds, will contribute a ton of overall curb appeal to this house, regardless of what color you decide.

I'd say go for a brick walkway, (something like this would look perfect around your tree)

do something like this along side the driveway

but with the current brick as is, maybe you want something a bit more mid-century?

But doing something w/that large expanse of grass, would really help

incorporate your tree w/a planting bed like this

    Flower beds against the brick

if you post a pic of your yard over on Landscape Design, maybe DigDoug will see it and do a mock up for you. He's great!
