How to decorate and not look cluttered.?

Hi there, I bought a desk but not totally satisfied with it though I think the light wood is pretty. Then I found a different desk of better quality that went on sale and I could afford to buy the lateral cabinet with it. But will that be too many different styles and dark heavy colors in my LR?

Need advice by tomorrow please and thanks!

OP: Have the cats learned to go through the kitty door? If not, it can be simple. Open a can of tuna and go into the garage in front of the door. Hold the door open so they can smell. Once they come out, you go back in with the tuna. Repeat on this side. Repeat a couple of times and they will get it.

My younger cat did no problem. my older girl is scared of the flap so I had to rig it so flap stays up. So glad to get litter box out of the house Lol.

Twillie, just so I understand your question, the second desk you found is the dark one in the catalog pictur? If you buy the darker desk, there is a lateral file that matches the desk?
You have the real estate to handle the dark furniture in that room and a dark desk is a better contrast with the light curtains. If it was me, I would go with the dark wood and matching lateral file.
I dont understand the concern about too many different styles? The desk you already bought is a different style, either desk will be a different style. As I said earlier, I don't think it's too much dark.

I love the new home you found for the bar cart.

Need advice by tomorrow please and thanks!

Yes exactly! I realize my concern was silly- you are right about the different styles - it’s just I thought the lighter wood was less obtrusive and therefore wouldn’t clash. Cause I have 3 additional dark pieces on the front half of the LR. But my bookcase still might be moved. I may have to give up the chairs that we liked so much at the window to consignment. Thanks for responding so late at night for me Lisa.

Hi... I somehow missed the posts of recent. You liked the conversation set by the window, and I did too. So is there no other space you'd like to work at, and have a desk?

I have to place the desk near a power outlet. Yeah the chairs looked cute but the space wasn’t being utilized unless I have guests and even then I invite them to sit on sofa. More photos to come of new desk.

What do y’all think about this mirror? Should I change the hardware on the sideboard/entry unit to match polished brass?

"Sorry" I don't like straight lines compared to soft curvy sideboard/ lamp.

Don't think its gold shine suits either. What about a satin finish, even pewtery like the handles seem ... ?

I could always use the mirror I have or get the one from the oval and round mirror store.

A bit large. Please don't squeeze those by diners. ;)

Nope these items are leaving to consignment.

I’m going to buy the mirror you suggested.

Twillie, that one's nice in silver or gold, but can we see the mirror above [that is currently over the fireplace]...?

and if items 'of interest' will fill the vignette, might a plain mirror be ok?

Fireplace mirror. The mantle can be redecorated and angel figures moved.

If possible, could we see that fp mirror over your console?

    last modified: 4 years ago

This mirror is actually champagne color, wood frame, beveled.

    It can hang either way.

It's a different style than arrowback chairs? ... not that we don't mix styles, but I think a more transitional style is better...

Those pieces were there in my kitchen temporarily while I was moving stuff around.

Somewhere in this room I want to display one or more of these deer antlers.

the following picture is of my barrister bookcase on that same wall - still trying to decide if it’s going to stay in this room.

    Love all the ideas!

I'd like to see a pro come on board. If you keep a 'busy' set of books in a case, Idk that I'd even add a mirror. Cause your items are quite close in the room.

... let's remember you don't want it to look cluttered ... maybe you know what items you need/want to remove, to go toward the goal.

Definitely! I already decided and am waiting for consignment to arrange pick up and a handyman to install some shelves. Bookcase will go to 2d BR so that space will need something - perhaps the chairs. Once I get help getting stuff out it’s going to come together.

Twillie, shelves for what? clutter? ;) maybe that's not funny. I'd like to see your other rooms, and Idk if that'd help though. Just curious where bookcase will go.

Entryway is done except for painting front door.

Fireplace mantel has a different focal point and accessories.

Twillie, I like! Funny how I look at a photo at a later time and see differently... ya know... so the mirror with metal rods connecting within the circle -- I could see it in same room with antlers and "whimsy attitude"... ?

Everdebz, which wall might I do that on? The one with my son’s painting would go with the theme - those are antlers from deer he hunted. Brian passed away is why I am keeping a collection.

    last modified: 4 years ago

Well what if his painting went over the mantel and benefited from the ceiling lights? I bet you've already tried that...

The loveseat is against the wall today... btw, my cat got the greatest exercise and fun with feather toys....

My cat loves this puzzle feeder box from Amazon

    - keeps her busy and they love the feather toy too!

These are the deer antlers I need ideas for. I have the wall space just don‘t know which wall and in what kind of order.

    Thanks!

This is my new desk and file cabinet- it’s huge- doesn’t fit by the desk.

Twillie, the file cabinet can't sit on the wall by the desk and face the desk? It looks like there's enough room. Did you try that position or were you trying to put the desk and cabinet side by side?
Where it is now is too far away from your desk to be useful.

What we're trying to avoid is furniture looking like soldiers lined up around the room. Plus, your eyes actually need blank spaces so the eye can rest. We want to create vignettes of purposeful areas.

A conversation area, yours includes your tv.
An entry area (sometimes used as a drop zone for keys, mail etc.
A desk area, with file storage if necessary.
Your China cabinet for your pretty and sentimental pieces that make you smile.

Think in those terms more than where is there room for "that"?

Btw, your desk is to die for gorgeous! I hope you have a beautiful view out that window and if you don't, can you create one? Maybe a flower garden filled with your favorite perennials for minimum upkeep, etc. Maybe a beautiful flowering bush, etc.
Your room continues to be very pretty.

Twillie, here are some pictures of how others have displayed antlers.
Do you want to hang all 5? What about hanging them on the wall to the left of your desk? Hopefully above your file cabinet. :)
Is there enough wall space to hang them around his picture. You may want to practice what it will look like with pieces of paper the size of your antlers and picture.

    Is this better?

You're fast!!! Love it in that position, but yeah, it's a big boy.
What about puttung your desk so it's to the back of your sofa and your file cabinet in front of your window? We can run cords under furniture. Or, what does the file cabinet look like as a "sofa table"?

This wall is left completely blank.

Not enough room for all deer antlers on the wall with the file cabinet. Or I can intersperse them through the room with 1 or 2 here and there.

The desk has to stay by the window due to the computer and light cords would be in a walking path.

Of course I still have 2 of these chairs.

I'll agree with Lisa's photo ideas over new wood/ and because so different than room's style, I think try keeping where you placed it next to desk [in corner]. Try 3 above it. Or 4 tight in a diamond ??

    Twillie thanked everdebz

I happen to like seeing your speakers [black] next to tv also black... instead of the baskets.

Curious with file cabinet next to tv - little amount of walking space? how much?

Everdebz tell me what is my room’s style? Believe it or not I haven‘t figured that out.

Sorry about your son you can put them over your file cabinet or in your office on a wall opposite the desk

LOVE that chair next to your tv.

It's your option to find out more about design. Houzz has many articles for good reading. Here's a bit:

"Style Secret: Soft Edges - traditional rooms emphasize curves and sink-right-in comfort. Skirted pieces feel cozy and genteel and counterbalance leggy tables and chairs. Cushions are plump; pillows are plentiful."

I forgot I had this book - it’s excellent! I have to figure out what is going on the blank wall. Antlers probably.

Twillie, I also have a long LR with the front half being the seating/tv area. The back half has several pieces of furniture but my favorite is the small, round drop leaf table very similar to the one in the picture below, except I painted mine antique red, with two matching chairs I keep at each end.

Mine is in the center of the room, and I have a sofa table a few feet from it. It sounds crowded but it's not. The table sits on the center of a persian rug which helps separate the areas.

You can use this table as a sofa/game table or use it for whatever. It's versatile. I love opening the leaves and wrapping Christmas presents on it.
