How do I transform half of the living room?

This living room will be mine in 10 days. The rest of the house is “coastal farmhouse,” which I love, but I want to change the look of the wood walls and the stone fireplace. It doesn’t fit the rest of the house. The wood walls aren’t “paneling” but wood, and I’m having trouble learning what to do to change the color - paint, wax, lime wash? Would love to lighten it up and make the walls white or lighter grey, or even white with the wood peeking through. Not sure where to begin with the fireplace, other than just painting it.

Help me oh wonderful Houzzers!

yeah, that floor isn't farmhouse either.

the wood walls can be worked into a farmhouse look, as can the fireplace. but those floors?

wow. what in the world were the owners thinking? Horrible match w/the walls and fireplace. besides the pattern, the coloring is completely opposite.

need more info (what your furniture is like) and more pictures (this supposed farmhouse style)

"walls white with the wood peeking through" yeh, not alot of distressed/ texture, but enough to blend better with room's surfaces.

What wood edges showed, would seem to match fp colors.

This is the same room from the other side, so trying to make it align with this. Furniture is similar to what’s in the picture.

Jute comes in natural, grey, bleached, etc... grey would blend if floor is grey. Even this could be risky to buy unseen....?

why can't you just remove the wood paneling? be a lot easier (and look better) than painting it. it should be attached to the current drywall. Try pulling off the wood planks, at least on the side wall.

on the fireplace wall, if you redo the stone (c-options below) and then paint that wood paneling a dark gray or even black, it could look nice.

See? similar to this one. (but you really need to redo that floor)

This is modern farmhouse styled room. I'd copy this down to the area rug and furniture placement.

the other wall would be white. remove this wood paneling.

    BTW, what's w/the diff flooring?

is that gray/white flooring tile? Then what's the brown flooring? another tile or real wood or laminate? Why were they done like that?

Sorry, but that gray/white flooring really needs to go. it doesn't work w/the other flooring, the walls, the fireplace, etc. You're doing all of this 'damage control' w/the paneling and the stone in order to make the funky tile flooring work, when in reality, IT is the one you should be changing.

However, to answer your question, white paint.

Romabio Classico lime wash for the stone. or, just use a watered down white paint in an eggshell. Romabio is better because it's meant for stone, but you can use what you like

another option is to do a mortar wash on that stone. would give you more of a rustic farmhouse look. Look up EmHenderson Mortar Wash

oh my @sarelle23. I am the first to say, "live with it before you change" but that floor needs to go. At first look I thought it was an area rug but if that's a fixture of the house, you need to get it GONE.

I can't tell if you have 2 different floor materials next to each other?

Beth, those are beautiful, thank you so much!!! 😍

Re: the floor... we almost didn’t go look at the house based on the living room picture. The living room is a step down, so I don’t know if they were trying to make a visual difference for that reason or not. And it’s not throughout the entire house. It isn’t as bad in person, but it’s certainly not what I would have put in.

I actually like this idea best.

see about removing the wood from the side wall.

do your stone work w/the mortar wash or the other options. I like the soft white color. (Romabio might work here too)

paint the angled wood paneling black. (make sure to prime the wood first w/a dark gray primer. you can have primer tinted any color, so go for a dark gray if painting black)

get a good roller and give it two coats w/a deep black eggshell or satin paint. If you want it really black, have the paint guy give you extra squirts of their black coloring. that's what I did)

bring in a very large area rug to cover most of that busy flooring and bring in complementary furniture.

BTW, that chandelier makes all the diff in this room. you have a nice vaulted ceiling. take advantage of it and do a cool fixture

If you do a sisal or jute, then you could layer a black one on top

I like this woven jute in the charcoal. this would be nice if you have lighter furniture

I do too! I thought I wanted lighter walls all around, but loving the darker color on both sides of the fireplace. Really appreciate your advice!

I like the layered rug idea. you could get a very large sisal/jute in a natural tone. (basically use the rug like it's wall to wall carpet, except it wouldn't go that far. just far enough to cover a good portion of the busy floor.

Then bring in some light elements, texture, natural wood (All of these look awesome w/the black wall accent and the mortar/cream stone fireplace)

paint the other walls Simply White, or another neutral white

here's one option on how to layer

another dark wall accent w/the white stone

some decor items to work w/the room. notice all of the texture

Article has great sofa/bench/chair options. I have their black leather sofa and bench and love it

this type of decor (warm leather pouf or pillows) helps warm up all of the cool gray/black tones. greenery and tall plants will too

don't forget a cool light. look into the woven pendants that are all the range now

try these colors. all of them should work w/your flooring. (go as black as you can on the paint though. )

Shout out to Beth!! Awesome ideas. And totally second them. LOL to the flooring. I’m just laughing.
But yes. Definitely the first thing I’d tackle.
I saw this really pretty, very real looking budget friendly sheet floor. From I believe Home Depot. It looked awesome!!

Whew! @Beth H. : has talked me off the ledge about the floor.

toz... I'm trying to work with it! covering most of it is all she can do for now. thank goodness that jute/sisals in a 9x12 size isn't too expensive!

Oooh I love the layered rug idea! I saw one on Pinterest the other day and your pics are incredible. Thank you Beth, you are making me feel excited about the living room now! 🤗

I would paint the left wall the same color you have on the other walls. White wash your rock firplace, weather wash stain the wood on both sides of the fireplace and ebony stain the mantle wood. a large jute or sissel rug to cover the floor topped with a good farmhouse rug

    😍 there's a solution for every dilemma.

If the flooring is LVP it may be super easy to remove...if not a new LVP flooring can be probably be overlaid easily...once that is done the rest will be less of a problem as well...money and effort better spent toward the elephant (flooring)in the room...first...

    Looks Amazing! Well done!

The only tweeks I would consider (aside from accessories) at some point is a bulky hand hewn type mantel. Think lots of cracks and character. And some larger lamps for your end tables.

I don't want to distract from the amazing job you all did because it looks great!

Wow! You have made delicious lemonade out of some very bitter lemons! Is there a Houzz award for this? If so, you should get it.

Looks great !....I wonder if you have any idea what is under the multi-color flooring?...and if there is a spot in the corner to pull up a piece to see...what if there is hardwood under there?..you have definitely made the best of what you have...good job

omg, that looks so good! what a difference black and white makes!

I'd add some taller table lamps, maybe a cool chandelier to hang in the middle of the room.

and some art like they've done here. Your room can look almost exactly like this!

Thank you all so much! No way it would have looked as good as it does now without your input 👏

Looks great! Just get your lamps to scale and the rug (the bigger the better) for the final touches.
