Would flat cabinet doors work in a kitchen in a traditional apartment?

Hi, I'm renovating my kitchen and I like a contemporary, minimalist look, so I was thinking I'd do flat slab doors -- painted white, but not glossy. I've decorated my condo in a contemporary style. But the condo itself came with a lot of more elaborate, traditional touches, like a fireplace, white crown molding, and traditional four-panel doors, and the kitchen is open, in the same space as the living room and fireplace (see photos below). Would flat slab doors still work ok? If so I'd probably prefer that. But if shaker doors would fit better with the apartment, I might do that -- you'll see in the photos that the existing kitchen has shaker cabinet doors, but it was made 22 years ago. (I'm going to get flat drawers regardless.)

Curious to hear if anyone has thoughts -- and if you have photos of flat panel cabinet doors in an old-fashioned apartment or house, I'd be curious to see those.

Also, as a side note, I'm wondering if an island would look better than a peninsula (even if it provides less storage and counter space).

Thanks in advance,

Zach
