Navy Blue paint struggles. Not Purple? Not Green and Not Gray.

Is it possible to have a dark navy blue that does not give off a purple, green or lighter gray. (For a kitchen island only) Like I would live in dark lighting if it can appear black. I have ALOT of light in my kitchen. So in the light I want it to appear dark navy. So far I’ve tried. Benjamin Moore’s:
Polo Blue — too purple
Hale navy— my lighting appears lighter Gray
Yankee—contender. But still struggle with purple.
Mysterious— too gray.

Need suggestions. I have a custom cabinet maker. So I give him pain numbers and he makes the paint. But I can get charged now. Since we did. 4. Lol. And it’s crunch time.

Any suggestions. Even things to mix. Combine. Lol. I’m clueless and don’t want to settle if there is a color out there.

Do you have a photos of your space? What color and material is your floor? That color will reflect on the island and affect the color you see.

Blue is a primary color if you want it darker you're going to get other hues in the paint unless you would want it mixed with a richer black paint but still you will.

I wonder if it is your lighting. I used Polo Blue and it is definitely navy. So dark its almost black.

    @calidesign
The floor will be a light white oak probably more a natural stain. Counter is bianco superiore quartzite. Hardware will be a bronze. Honey bronze by top knobs and faucet is Brizo gold luxe. (Pic of one of the slabs)

@redesign in my space hale navy is definitely grey and dark only with lights off and windows shut. Lol We have a piece of cabinet in hale navy.

Edit. So sorry.@boxerpal. I meant OLD NAVY not polo blue. Old navy was what we didn’t like. Polo blue I was researching today. So was stuck in the brain. Lol. Does polo blue give off purple with a lot of light?

Maybe look at Farrow and Ball colours. Scotch Blue. Stiffkey Blue, Railings

We put Sherwin Williams Naval on an accent wall in our living room this summer and I think it reads very much true navy. Definitely no green or grey undertones (the grey was what we didn't like about Hale Navy). No purple to my eye either.

Awesome. My try a Naval sample this week. 🤗

Because of the lighting in your space, any navy blue can appear purple, green, or gray. You need to try them out in situ.

Here's a link to a discussion on color rendering. Ironically, Stiffkey Blue is one of the examples where it looks totally different depending on the light and the computer monitor.

@diana. Totally agree. Which is why we tried about 6 on a wall. Then had 4 cabinets made. And all not the same.

So I came here seeking an advice, if anyone had similar situations.

Thank you for the link. Such great info.

I wonder if it’s the way your cabinet guy is mixing the paint? I would get a sample directly from Ben Moore and see. I’ve used polo blue and it’s definitely a navy, almost black in some lights.

@leighd73 yes. I corrected. It was my error. I tried OLD NAVY. I researched Polo blue today and typed the wrong name. (Name brand clothing thing. Lol)
So maybe polo blue would work? 🤷‍♀️ going to try.

I'd be curious to know what he's using as the target to mix to - is he using a chip or sample you gave him? Also, have you checked how close the custom mix actually is to the target?

Every cabinet maker should be using an ultra-portable spectrophotometer like a Spectro 1 to qualify custom mixes.

@lori I will definitely ask that question. But I give him the name, brand and scu number

Also, FYI. Naval is similar to Hale Navy it just has more Chroma (colorfulness). So it literally is less gray.

Pittsburgh Paint's Sailor's Coat is a dark, warm blue. At least, in my east-facing foyer it is (which is not this picture).

It plays almost black in certain lighting but I don't see purple.

we also had the fireplace painted the same Polo Blue BM

@tdesanti what color did you end up going with. I have hale navy, polo blue and old navy samples up and old navy definitely is looking purple in my space. I am leaning toward polo blue

I have Polo Blue and felt the same about Old Navy when we tested. Just took a quick photo (doing a bathroom demo so excuse the mess). In person it looks a little more dark navy and not quite as grey.

    @hu
We went with Anchors Aweigh by scherwin Williams. And we LOVE!!

@leighd73 and @tdesanti both look fantastic. The struggle is definitely real.

I went through 24 sample pots looking for the perfect shade of blue for my dark kitchen, so i definitley can empathize!

Have you considered Benjamin Moore Van Duesen blue. It is a ”light” navy, but I see no purple or Green. Who knows how your light will present it?

(BTW, I ended up throwing in the towel on finding the perfect blue, and went with cream instead...)

I love Van Diesen Blue! Doesn't read purple or green, isn't too dark and feels very navy to me. I've had it for an accent wall in a mostly-white paneled room for about 20 years, I still love it!
