Will Hale Navy work with a beige granite and multi color backsplash?

Background: Preferred color scheme has always been some combination of brown/tan because it is all I know. Attempting to modernize my dark space by decorating in a navy/tan/white scheme throughout the house. About to have my kitchen cabinets and island repainted. Desired look is white cabinets with an island accent color. I am not interested in investing in new granite or a backsplash for the "best" outcome, but making the best with what I have. The kitchen peninsula will get a board and batten trim and be painted with the same white as the cabinets. All trim/doors will be repainted in the cabinet color as well. I am also extending the cabinets over the dead space above the fridge. I have 4000k kitchen lightbulbs.

Current Situation: Kitchen walls are unknown beige/tan (found an old SW paint can that the prior owners had for the rest of the house/kitchen ceiling and color matched it, so I don't know the name). Kitchen walls were a very yellow beige (as seen on the unpainted peninsula, which still has the old color) that I hated.

Cabinet color: Based on what I've read, I believe I need to stick with a warm white because my granite/backsplash won't work with a starker white. I think I've settled on White Dove, unless ya'll tell me I'm wrong and there are better options. I want to go as "white" as I can get away with.

Island accent color: I'm leaning towards a charcoal-navy. I don't think I can go too blue, because there is no blue in my granite. My granite has more of a charcoal/black color, and the little tiles in the backsplash are dark with a few pops of a lighter blue. I initially chose SW Cyberspace, but the contractor wants to use a BM paint, so I'm looking at Hale Navy (not interested in having BM match SW, I've seen a lot of posts about how it is never quite right, so I think I would prefer to just find a BM color to use). Hale Navy definitely seems more blue when I hold my painted board samples up to it, but I do like it. My concern is, can I go bluer? Or, would it not look right with my granite and backsplash?

Because my granite is a bit outdated, I am having trouble finding photos that pair Hale Navy with a beige granite. Seems when people use Hale Navy, they update their counters as well.

Appreciate any insight!

You want bright then address thelighting first . Make sure all bulbs are LEDs 4000K and IMO everywhere is best. That backsplash IMO has to go it is not that big of a deal to remove and replace with something much nicer like a glass large format subway tile for instance .I do not think B&B will be a good choice on that island . Choose a new backsplash after the lighting then and only then do you choose wall color . I honestly can not see blue working in that space at all.The backspalsh should be a color from the granite so no blue and if you are wanting to now go blue and white that counter needs to go . So I would suggest yo do the new backsplash and add some robins egg blue accessories in this space no dark navy at all. Then slwoly work on the spaces around this space to start the new color scheme the walls acan be a bit warm white everyhere and start adding the od blue piloow on a sofa and a touch of wite here and there .

Can you take a closer photo of your granite? It looks speckled gray to me, not beige? I see you mention that, so I'm confused.

Hale Navy or another dark blue should work with your granite, in that case. Please see island photos, below.

I skimmed your post, sorry, but do not pick your backsplash yet. (BTW, I am NOT recommending backsplash in first photo!) Wait until your cabinets are painted. White Dove is a lovely color. (My trim is White Dove.)

Navy, tan and white is a popular and safe color scheme, but is it what you love?

When you look at the things you own (clothing, art, jewelry, pillows, blankets, towels, dishes) what colors are you drawn to? What colors make your heart sing.

Your home should bring you joy and one of the best ways to accomplish this is with colors that you love.

Here is a picture of some of the things I own and love. There isn't any tan or navy. A Navy, tan and white color scheme wouldn't work with the things I own and love.

here's a similar kitchen (although yours is a bit more cramped)

the kitchen is very beige. the island is painted BM Ocean Floor, the white is Cloud White

I agree w/patricia. get a new backsplash. it's not that much to change out if you do some of the work yourself. like demo.

Your spending a grip of money for painting those cabinets, aren't you? ( To have a pro do those cabinets in the correct way, it should be in the 5K range). If so, why keep an older backsplash?

Just don't discount the idea. you can always do it later after everything is done.

Prepping and priming is 75% of the work in painting cabinets. I'd make sure to ask exactly what their steps are for that.

In fact, if you read this link, and scroll to the middle, she gives an exact list of the steps used in prepping. Make sure and ask your painter to tell you EXACTLY what they're going to do. And with what products

Here are some other whites (paired here w/this tan/beige granite) . I happen to think Simply White or Oxford White are perfect whites for cabinets. and might be better in your condensed kitchen.

    SW Alabaster

My kitchen is SW Creamy and my countertops are a grayish green. Unless you plan to do the countertop soon, go very soft white or ivory. You can still do the island blue. Alabaster might work too. I suggest getting samples of the whites you’re considering and hold them up to you cabinets. That’s the best way to know.

Here is a close up of the granite. The kitchen looks into the living room which has a beige couch and navy/white/walnut colors and accents. I love navy, white and shades of beige/tan, and decorated with it in other rooms on the 1st floor.

We were quoted $1600 to change out the backsplash and would prefer to use that on other projects, so I’m trying to get away with not changing it out and just picking the best colors that I can get away with for this counter and the backsplash. I don’t anticipate changing out the counters as we will be in this house for just a few years more before selling it.

And here is a close up of the backsplash. Appreciate all of the insight and comments!

This is the space the kitchen opens up to, to give you a sense of the other colors near the kitchen.

I'd be a bit concern that the contractor only wants to work with BM paint. I had that situation once and come to find out, he had such bad credit that only one paint store would "credit' him paint. Half way through my job, I was having to pay him in advance so he could buy the paint. Then he started to disappear on my job and before I knew it and $6K later, I was having to hire a new painter to not only redo what he painted but to finish the job as he had disappeared. And for those wondering why I hired him in the first place. I was new to this town and called the local BM store and asked for painters names. This one they said was the best. Later on I found out why he was the "best". He wasn't, they were just trying to recoup some of their money. A good painter should have no problem painting with SW paints, too.

My suggestion is to work with the granite, rather than forcing a potentially awkward combination. I think the above color scheme would be so much more complimentary than white/navy. You could use a light or dark grey on island and if you don’t want grey, I’d paint the same color as cabinets (consider a creamy white vs stark white). It will also suit your living room’s walnut/beige/white.

Re: paint preference, the contractor told me that he prefers a specific type of BM latex epoxy for cabinets over the waterborne alkyd that another contractor, who uses SW, told me about. The company I want to go with for the cabinet painting has really good reviews in my neighborhood.

That's a good reason :) and makes sense.

Don't know if this means you get to pick the color or they are just handing out free samples but if you can get a free sample of Hale Navy to play around with it might be worth your time to check it out https://www.acehardware.com/free-sample-saturday

Thanks for posting your granite. After seeing it, and looking again at your photos, I think you should play it safe and paint your island White Dove, not blue. I think you can leave your backsplash, if it's just not on your punch list to replace but it doesn't need emphasis, either. Similarly, I think your island doesn't warrant the accenting, and Hale Navy risks chopping up the space or creating a clash with that granite.

Your instinct was not to go "too blue" because there is no blue in your granite. Kylie M. would tell you to listen to that instinct and drop the blue island entirely. Your refresh will still be attractive. Here's her guidelines, if you're interested:

While there are ALWAYS exceptions, in order to paint your island or cabinets blue, your kitchen would ideally have:

    • White or wood cabinets
    • A countertop that has blue in it or is white/gray
    • It’s flexible towards many tiles/linoleum products, it DOES love wood floor too!

Your island doesn't have that big of a visual impact since it is hidden in the kitchen. Paint it the same as the cabinets or even consider leaving it as is with the stain which I think would do a nice job of pulling everything together and giving you that extra element you are wanting in the Hale Navy.

I sincerely appreciate all of the advice and guidance! You’ve given me a lot to think about. I painted Hale Navy on Gravel Gray on some poster board to get an idea of how it could look. To be honest, I like it 😭. I’ll blame my lack of decorating skills if the pros think it looks terrible. I’m mulling it over, along with just painting the island white.

    Love it!

I think both samples look good. Just a word about the painter’s preference: in NY, my painters all preferred BM. Here in TN, it’s SW. As a consumer, I find way more SW stores here and I’m starting to think the availability of one over the other is the only reason. I’ve used both in my homes and they work well. Sometimes, a certain shade of a color is just too perfect, so I drive further for the BM color if I have to. Professionals have preferences.

Stick to warm white or ivory. Your countertop doesn’t need to be changed. Yes, pulling a grey from it might be a “better match” but it is your house and you should use the colors that make you happy. My previous yellow kitchen got a lot of wrinkled noses but I didn’t care. I painted a quarter sawn oak kitchen white, with a lot of protests and I still don’t care. It’s refaced and the oak sides were painted without any hint of the wood underneath. Good prep and primer will cover your oak completely. Here is my kitchen in SW Creamy.

    Red, beautiful!

@abruslaw I really love this SW color so I recommend it to people who can’t do the brighter whites. @Beth H, thank you. It’s refaced, like your kitchen.

My kitchen cabinets were just painted Hale Navy last week. I didn’t update my granite. I love it! Before & after pic:

@Gia - that blue is stunning! Great paint job.

Thank you! I love that it looks great in every light! Here it is in the evening with the lights on.

I ended up going with White Dove for the cabinets & peninsula and Hale Navy for the island. Although the granite and backsplash are dated, I feel like the paint really freshened up the look and I’m quite happy with it.

Wow! It looks SO much better. It’s bright and happy and the blue is perfect!

I’m really happy with how the blue looks. I was nervous going against general advise to stay away colors that aren’t in the backsplash/granite, but I think the gray/charcoal tones latched on to the Hale Navy really well.

    It is beautiful!
