Why are their two central ducts running down the middle of the room?

Are they both distribution ducts or is one a return? Love this project. I am thinking of doing this in a Tom Gist house in Tucson, a cointemporary of Ralph Haver. In my house the insulation is packed in between the 2X12s, did this project required a different roofing material like foam?

There are 2 ducts because we needed to move a specific amount of air that would've required 1 larger duct that wouldn't have works for the head height in the low house, so two ducts solved that problem. The insulation is packed on top of the roof with foam
