The design style is a bit schizophrenic. Country style in the foyer and Contemporary Modern in the dining room. I am all for mixing styles, but the arch door sideboard in that flesh color just doesn't work nor the topiary trees

    😊thank you

The flesh is sea grass wallpaper. It did go better with the yellow that was there before but the yellow was awful. I think the picture doesnt do it justice tho. I really need help with chairs . thank you for not saying other things about my room.

I think you need chairs with a tall back

i think these would work if you reupholstered the seats with an upscale fabric

I really like your room! You’ve done a great job, it’s lovely and inviting.

I’m getting the impression you like a mix of a bit of modern, with leaning more traditional? If so, I think a graceful style like this would look nice and be comfortable, as well as go with your other elements. I especially like the idea of curved legs with so many strong, square shapes in there. These have lots of different fabric choices, and three kinds of wood finishes:

Beautiful table! love the rug & floor too. I get an Arts and Crafts style vibe in this room because of the simple lines & textures & pottery decor that is visible in picture. I see tall, narrow back chairs with either wooden backs & leather seats or upholstered back & seat. Emphasis is on the simple lines Are you familiar with Stickley furniture? I visited a Stickley showroom when I was selecting new chairs for my kitchen and was really surprised at the selection. Got great advice, picked out the style, fabric and wood type too, completely customized. It’s taking a bit longer these days 20-25 weeks to receive, but if you can wait, you may want to look around at those options.

Yes @cam_natale , I agree on the selection and service. I’ll also mention for benefit of OA, if not familiar with Stickley furniture, it is pricey. The styles of their lines are so perfect for lovers of MCM, Arts & Crafts, and even Shaker style of furniture. That’s why I mentioned looking at their chairs might give OA some ideas for her dining room chair style.

Still looking for chairs. but did a bit of updating today! It was a long day of searching and trying to brighten up with the curtains and the rug to go with the new paint color. What color chairs??? Any thoughts? Don't think I want cream color

yes @KW PNW Z8 @cam_natale I am totally familiar with Stickley. It's a wonderful store. Table is from Arhaus. I want really nice chairs, but don't want to pay a fortune. lol

@carlyabbey Wow - that new rug is gorgeous! Love the new, lighter drapes too! Meant to say earlier that I really like the built in console & grass cloth. Now that I see more of it - even better! So, chair color - my thought now with new views of your table is that maybe tailored upholstered chairs would be a nice counterpoint to the strong wood elements of table & console. Very tailored with straight legs, no curves. Not sure how high of back but definitely some height. I’m trying to zoom in on the border colors in the rug. Looks like a rust & turquoise or teal - neither blue green shade as bright as the turquoise vases you had at right end of console - where did those go? They’re great with that rug! Back to chair color - if you don’t want cream - what about a color from rug border? Even the background color of border would be nice against table. That background is neutral but it’s definitely not cream.

#6, The Powell nail button camelback chair in tan is my choice of the styles & colors @User shows. I’d like it better without the nail head trim. The color isn’t bad & might be good. All the other chairs are too fussy or ornate.

Designmaster is the brand of chair that I’ve ordered, there were so many to choose from and depending on if you can get them discounted, they may fall within your price range. I own Ballard Designs chairs that are used but by time I updated them in my choice of fabric, I was almost at the cost of purchasing new, which gave me exactly what I wanted. I chose the DARBY Side Chair because it has a “handle” on the top and can hopefully help me keep those chairs a bit cleaner!

The interesting thing to me is that several of the very niceest built in features of your room invite the eye outward, away from the table: A window, a fireplace, a big decorated niche. For me the emotional charm of a dining room is feeling invited to the table, an intimate space for friends, so the focus ultimately should come to rest there. You’ve got the issue half solved with the massive dramatic table. I think the chairs need to pull people in as well, either because they make guests feel like royalty or they are a surprising bold color or richly patterned or super tall. Neutrals like what dominates the walls or the other fabrics might not be enough, too sleepy

My husband really likes our old drapes better, so I want to be respectful... I do like the neutral ones better but..... So.. this will definitely dictate the new chairs...

@carlyabbey - I agree with you on chairs - too ornate, too fussy. I like blue too but don’t think that shade works with either patterned drapes or rug. I’m still voting for simple lines. I was thinking a small pattern that reads as texture would be ok since only pattern is on floor rug. But, if you’re going back to checked (?) pattern drapes instead of solid neutral then I’d stick with solid color for chairs. Do you plan to hang art or mirror over fireplace? That will make a difference too. I don’t disagree with @User thought about other features of the room drawing attention but I don’t agree they draw one’s eye away from table. I think the table is the strongest piece in the room & it commands attention! I did like your flowers on table. I’m still looking for the return of the teal / turquoise pottery vases.....😊

@KW PNW Z8 this is especially for you. I moved the teal to the other end of the built in.. lol. So these chairs are not staying , but maybe the parsons style? Also as much as I love navy.. It wouldn't work.

This is what will go back up above the fireplace.

    ?? Arhaus chairs....

@carlyabbey - thanks for putting the vase back where I can see it 😁 I actually love that chair style with your table - where did you stash those?? They confirm for me that my style choice works - for me anyway! if you put the neutral drapes back, their chair back pattern might work even with the rug pattern since they coordinate. But, with the drapes, too much so I think the Arhaus chair you’re showing & its color too, is pretty great. Even better that they’re on sale!! I do like your above fireplace piece & how the squares in it mimic the fireplace tile. Your ceiling lighting is perfect with this room too. You‘ve created a really pretty room - I’d feel right at home in it.

    @KW PNW Z8

maybe if the drapes were the correct length. they are from pottery barn, not the best quality compared to the others...

Wow - really the difference in that end wall with neutral drape vs darker patterned drape is like night and day. The neutral drape just opens that entire end of the room up & even the art on both sides of glass doors show up better. It would help if this newest picture showed exactly all of the room that your first pic with these chairs does but it’s close enough. Maybe instead of new chairs you invest in better drapes as the patterned ones are? I’m pretty sure I like the patterned chairs with the rug because of the muted pattern on rug & that the colors are the same. I will say I am challenged with putting patterns together but I do think this works because of the strong element of table. Things can look different in person so I’d ask you what you & your husband think of color & pattern compatibility? I’m looking at the blue Easter eggs in the clear glass candle holder on table - its that blue tone of those 3 vases again & it’s in the chair colors too. Might be nice color for next centerpiece - just sayin’ 😉

Beautiful dining area! I think these tie in with all of the beautiful elements you have so far or something like this with dark legs like your table but light in color but with texture and details

@Lisa Caudill Designs Thank you so much! I love when people superimpose something into the picture.. So much has changed since that first picture... new rug..Thank you for your time

@KW PNW Z8 you're amazing. Thank you for spending so much time with me. Houzz can sometimes be a difficult spot to land. If you see the very first post that someone wrote on this thread. YIKES... I didn't ask for that

    Color of rug border:

    last modified: 4 years ago

The fireplace, pendant lighting, metal piece going above, as well as the opposite wall‘s design create an interesting, warm, specific look that I’d try to compliment. I think the rug is not pulling room together and therefore making chairs harder to select. If interested or if possible, suggest a natural fibre slightly geometric rug and then look for modern, almost masculine chairs. The overall result will be modern, earthy, clean lines but warm.

@carlyabbey - thank you for your kind words Carly & also for giving some thought to my suggestions (and to my requests for displaying pieces I like 😉). Yours was a fun thread to follow & engage with. It’s especially fun when a communication connection is made between the OA & one or more of the responders. I did read from the first reply to you and I’m right there with you. I also was quite taken aback at a response to my first post for kitchen changes help - I know one needs a thick skin at times but it still stung! On the flip side, I’ve decided all of the Houzzers mean well even when they comment on points not relevant to the OA’s request, and I’ve read some wonderful ideas & gotten some really helpful info from answers to other people’s home challenges. Again, thanks for your note - made my day! Kathy

I think your current chairs (if you do the neutral curtains) look perfect, as well as comfortable. I wouldn’t replace them with any we’ve all suggested, they really do look great. Love that pattern!

Would it be less expensive than new chairs to have slipcovers made for your current chairs? IDK...

    Beautiful room!

I was thinking leather parsons chairs, possibly teal or moss green? something earthy to relate to the fireplace, and pick up color in curtains that are hemmed so they are 1/4 inch off the floor with weights in them, and not sure any one mentioned this as emphasis is on floor but your light fixture should be all the same length and 30" above the table top if the room has 8 foot ceilings, and 33" above the table if the room has 9 foot ceilings. I think you have a beautiful room and love your table.....

Lovely room and i would look for straight lines with little to no curves to echo the other straight lines in the room.

Since you are putting a strong urban geometric over the fireplace, and have an urban scene opposite in the artwork, I think these might work with the overhead lights and the rug
