Thanks! What commonly found sour lemon variety would you recommend for growing in ground and keeping around 5 ft. or training in a flat shape? I'm in zone 9.

I am not sure regarding your height and espalier needs, but i think my favorite "true" lemon, is the 'Lisbon'. I have the more vigorous yellow Eureka (compared to the pink Eureka), but still like 'Lisbon' better..., at least in Zone 7/NJ.

Regular eureka, Lisbon, Santa Theresa feminello (if you’re in Modesto you should be able to find one from four winds up there). Buy a grafted tree, it will be easier to maintain in a smaller fashion if it is a semi-dwarf or dwarfing rootstock. You also have willits and newcomb nurseries up north, they have really nice starter trees.

To piggyback on my previous comment, if you do end up going to a nursery to pick out a tree make sure you are doing so within your county. Looks like Modesto is within the current ACP quarantine boundaries according to the CFDA map below.

V,Pink is a novelty and has proven to be less cold tolerant than the Lisbon. I'd choose Lisbon on c35. Mt Santa Teresa on volk soared to 25 ft in 4 years. My Lisbon on Carrizo is about 5 ft shorter and Lisbon on c35 is shortest at about 15. They are vigorous so you will need to prune and shape along the journey

I have a LIsbon on dwarf rootstock and I have to trim it back every year to the 8' I want. I probably don't get the yield I would if I let it grow, but then I would have no way of picking the fruit any higher.

That's what I had in mind - trimming to be able to pick without a ladder. Also I don't need a ton of lemons so, for me, slight loss of yield isn't a problem. I have a Meyer Lemon but don't really like the flavor so I'm looking to replace it with a lemon with classic flavor. Is Lisbon particularly thorny?
