Where would you put the kitchen appliances to avoid this?

All the houses in our neighborhood have the same exact layout so after scouring Zillow photos we like this reno the best (there is a wall where the peninsula/fridge is currently and it's a galley kitchen)...

BUT

...the range on the peninsula?! That seems dangerous for kiddos and will fill the small space with smoke/smells.

With this same footprint, where would you suggest placing the kitchen appliances? The space is a lot smaller than the photos make it appear and we wouldn't go for that big of a fridge. We would have to re-route the plumbing but I've thought about the sink on the peninsula instead.

Flip the sink and range. So the range is against wall just to right of small window. Place the sink under window at end of peninsula or in peninsula - not my choice as my sink is always a mess.

^^ this. plus with the range against the wall, it's easier to do a vent hood.

also consider where your dishswasher is. it should be next to the sink, and also within easy reach of cabinets so you don't have to step far to put away dishes.

Thanks, that was my initial thought but the space there is extremely shallow (layout is flipped and the bump-out is plumbing and electricity—wall is plastered brick, not much to work with in terms of re-routing):

ohhh, that's why the DW is over there. you can always do a range hood mounted from the ceiling. search for "island range hood". as far as kids.... do you mean because they can reach it when sitting at the island? if they're super young, then seat them at the far end.

but I'll let other people with kids chime in on that, lol.

Thanks—the more that I think about it and look at all the other photos of layouts...maybe it does make the most sense to have the range there? The gas line is also already there.

Not sure if this would work for the current range spot on the peninsula but what about a pop up vent instead of a hood. You will need a bit more depth in the countertop but it eliminates the over head bulk. And blocks possible fingers.

We need a measured 2D drawing of the space with dimensions including doors and windows.

I'd consider removing the door and adding a sliding patio door at the dining table area. Induction 30" slide-in where the door is with a adequate hood.

Will ref fit where pantry/mw cabinet is to R of door? If so, range could come out of island to centered on former ref wall (w/hood). mw could go in island near ref. You could do ceiling suspended brass/steel shelving for add’l storage of daily dishes, glassware, and/or other serveware, decorative items too. I’ve done this on a few projects recently and am seeing more of it as an evolution of the open shelving trend.
