Obviously the leather sofas aren’t coastal so they should head out to Craigslist if you can’t make use of them else where in your house. There are lots of choices for seating that would be lighter and have some beach-vibes, like sea grass or rope detailing. Lots of choices for coastal themed pillows.

Your media cabinet and book case don’t look vert precious, so repainting those in coastal colors should be easy.

I happen to not like coffee tables, and since yours in is a traffic area, I suggest that when you refurnish you think in terms of portable small tables or movable ottomans to go with your seating rather than one central obstacle to walking through the room.

The space will probably feel more airy if you use plug-in sconce lamps on the walls rather table lamps. There are nicer more modern ceiling fans you can buy inexpensively to replace the old black one.

Do people walk through the room with wet feet? An indoor/outdoor rug might be your best bet and they now come in designs that look very nice in an indoor space. Simple can be best

Nice room as is ... even if a bit dark.

The most obvious change to give a more "coastal" vibe would be to begin by removing everything from the walls, repainting them a "coastal" color you like and then pause. Also remove all pictures and decorative items from shelving. Don't rush to add everything back to the walls or shelving until you make sure what you add back adds to the look you want. An uncluttered look will give a more open and airy beach vibe.

This is your home ... not some office to be displayed to the public at large -- so would definitely put comfort and function and personal taste over "decor".

Would seriously consider a more modern lighter colored ceiling fan.

While dark wood interior doors can be a great look in a formal room, white conveys more of a beach vibe. There is already a stark contrast between the dark wood doors and the wall you have -- more than I might want in a small room. If you're painting the walls a light color for a "coastal" vibe, then you might want to consider painting the interior doors and wood window and door trim white to better suit the "coastal" wall color you choose.

Like the "coastal" picture over the sofa. You might consider a color from within it for your walls.

If you repaint this room, do consider repainting all the adjoining walls that can be seen from it (which appear to be the same color) so they're all the same new color.

Is there room in the corner or elsewhere to replace the dark open shelving with a glass front curio cabinet in which you can put everything decorative now openly displayed in the room on shelves or tables? (So you can re-purpose the dark open shelving to another space?)

Would leave the dark floor as is unless you want to replace it with tile -- wouldn't myself. Whether or not you want a "coastal" vibe rug is a matter of personal taste. To me, a rug usually visually shrinks a small room (and makes more work to clean it).

Like your coffee table. If you use the coffee table, do keep it -- the metal frame and glass top makes it light enough to work well with a "coastal" vibe. Curtains work well with it, too.

Taller thinner lamps for your side tables with medium straight sided white shades would be worth considering. If you choose a metal base, try matching the metal of your coffee table.

Would not paint large expensive quality wood furniture ( or pieces in great shape as your credenza appears to be).

Rather than paint your end tables, consider investing in a glass for the top of them and then add a lighter coastal color of fabric between the glass and table top. You could even use that glass to display family pictures beneath it against the lighter color you add without creating any "clutter" that works against a "coastal" vibe..

If you want to keep the leather sofas and not paint the media cabinet, I think if you put a light colored rug on the floor and then heavily accessorise with coastal items — you might get what you want! I would however remove the coffee table and replace the end tables with floor lamps, and paint the walls a breezier white (and get a new ceiling fan)

Hi Ital Mover and Suezbell, thank you for the amazing feedback, I am so grateful for your help!! Great ideas from both of you. I do want to replace the leather sofas, I feel they are a bit too big for the room & more importantly not very comfortable for us anymore, and the saddle brown color isn’t my favorite. Probably go with a neural, fabric based couch this time. A few of the walls are done in the sandstone faux finish - white background textured with highs & lows of beige. The walk behind the tv is in the tan family we were thinking of switching to the Benjamin Moore Seapearl or Chantilly Lace and continue into the adjoining room.

I love the shelf lamps and sea grass ottomans, and would consider painting the tv base - will depend on the couch color - I do love the Sea Salt color. The bladeless fan is very interesting, love the look of it. I am working on changing all the interior doors/frames to white as well. Any thoughts on seating ideas? Thanks so much!

How many people do you need to seat for TV watching? Why aren’t the leather sofas comfortable any more?

Usually 3-4 to watch tv. The cushions move and sink down too low, I could redo the inside but prefer a lighter fabric solution.

Definitely go with comfort first. I would look for a 3 or 4 seater sofa to face the TV, with either than many separate cushions or one long bench cushion, so that nobody is stuck sitting between cushions

Is a new media console an option here? It might be the angle of the photo, but the one in use looks fairly deep. I'm guessing it may have started life as a buffet or a dresser, or to house bigger electronics like an older TV or turntable. If you can go with a slimmer design - and even consider a wall mount for the TV - you'd have both a lighter appearance and more room to walk past it.

Wow, so many fantastic ideas, thank you all! I like the sofa w/ a swivel chair option - saw some cute whitewashed wicker ottomans with storage - but out of stock. One of the reason I’ve kept that tv base so long is the incredible amount of storage it has - it is solid oak. But it is quite bulky and deep. I like the more neutral rug better than the blue/tan diamond pattern. Anytime I can find extra storage, I’ll take it! This is a 60’s ranch w/ very small closets, not even an entry hall closet!
