French doors & bannister painted black, white or SW Urbane Bronze?

last modified: 4 years ago

Our daughter bought a fixer upper and she needs advice on which color to paint these french doors and bannister (and hand rail). House is smaller than it looks in this pic with 8 foot ceilings (open entry way which is nice). Light fixture being replaced.

Black, White or SW Urbane Bronze?

Spindles will be painted white. Floors and carpet are being ripped out (LVP on entire first floor and new carpet on stairs and upstairs). Wall color will be Accessible Beige or BM Edgecomb Gray (haven't decided yet).

Sorry we didn't get a better photo of the stairway but the other side is just a handrail on sheet rock which will need painted.

Appreciate your help!!!

IMO we need more info like her style, why paint the wood at all. What is her furniture like? Is this for a quick resale or a home? I think leaving it alone right now until she is in and has the floors done would be the best. Since we have no idea of the new flooring there is IMO no way to choose a colr for the wood.

Urbane Bronze by SW / Forest Floor by BM are colors that appear VERY differently depending on "light"; sometimes brown / green / grey. Before deciding prime and paint a large sheet of luan and test the color in the actual space.

This is the new flooring. She just doesn't like the "oak look" of the door and railing. They are painting kitchen cabinets white. She likes Modern Farmhouse.

The floors, upstairs carpet and PAINT will all be done before they move in so she really needs to decide now. I suppose she could do it later, but she really wants it done while they are making the mess.

She still hasn't decided on which two of these will work.

    Thanks for advice!

Also, this is not for a quick resale. Her and her fiance plan to live here a LONG time!

White trim black doors and stairs like this but riser in a wood that matches the new wood floors. If that can't happen right away do the risers black and do a sisal runner

I’m sorry. I posted the wrong color earlier. For the entire first floor and entry way she is trying to decide between BM Edgecomb Gray and SW Accessible Beige. Any opinions on this? Thanks!

I would go with bone China or old stone to coordinate with the floor. Depending on how much light the house gets. Old stone is my pick if the house has lots of light but if you need something lighter then go with Bone China.

Given the proximity to other doors, I think white might create a better flow. Most of the time they will probably be open (I rarely close mine).

If she likes the idea of black, there are other ways to use; front door, bannister, rug, lighting. It’s an easy job to paint after the fact, as the sanding will have already been done.

In regards to staircase, a runner vs full carpeting is a nicer look and if treads or risers are in bad shape, they can be painted.

A fixer upper: meaning a flip? Or a long term investment? Huge difference.

I am currently building and used Urbane Bronze for my interior doors and stair rails. I LOVE how it turned out. My balusters will be SW Pure White (same as trim) and walls are Repose Gray.

It’s a fixer upper not a flip. A beautiful home that has not been maintained in 20 years (the precious family had 5 children). Basically everything is being replaced except for the kitchen cabinets but those will probably be painted next year. The quote to paint them was 2K and it’s a small kitchen! They may do it themselves later. Right now with both of them working so much they already have their hands full! I’m liking the recommendation of painting the French doors white for now. White spindles and then black bannister.

I meant to say the PREVIOUS family not precious. Maybe they were precious I have no idea lol.

I painted my open floor plan LR DR Accessible Beige and Kitchen Revere Pewter . I hate them both. I live on the water so plenty of light but it always looks dirty. The Revere Pewter looks like mud. I am thinking about switching to white just have not decided between Pure White or Chantilly Lace.

Well that’s not good! I hear you on accessible beige

Dyan Weis I painted a large board to test the Accessible Beige and thought it looks flat and dirty, not to mention dark. I love Edgecombe Beige or Carrington Beige.

MomMom M - My brother and wife live on the lake and have redone a home. They painted most of it Chantilly Lace and the home is beautiful

Lisa Caudill Designs - I will have 2 sets of French doors (looking to the outside) flanking a fireplace with no other doors or windows on that wall. Would you paint a dark color on both the door and the trim, or just the door and do white on the trim to match the rest of the room?

ngb22 I have a Samplize of Edgecombe Beige. I will check out Carrington Beige - thanks!

I think urban bronze would look lovely for all three projects.
