HELP!!! Art work placement plus Entryway console

last modified: 5 years ago

I love this new set of artwork I purchased. After hanging I am questioning a couple of things. Is it too small for the wall or okay with the idea of minimalist feel? Should I move where hung to hang with additional artwork that has similar colors but more traditional style on the same wall?

Additionally I had my husband build me this table for my entryway. I have stained to coordinate with most of the wood flowing thru the house. That being said now I am thinking repainting or staining it a grey color or navy variation. Or is the black framed mirror wrong now? Should the mirror frame be a different shade of metal?

Since both the entry and dining are next to each other I would like it to reflect warmth, fun and some color. So I kept the walls neutral to add other pieces. Help!!!!!

I do have to keep current the dining table, chairs and console table in the entry. Floors are not changing (sadly). This whole area is still a work in progress so be kind everyone. :)

Thank you for any suggestions or please ask further questions. I can attach further pics if needed.

    Both are great!

Husbands table inspired - just wants something black on it (maybe a small succulent bowl) so your eye matches the mirror edge to the console - don't change the finish. I really like the art and think it just needs a bit more breathing room . . You could take the twins and separate them smore . and raise them a bit ..

Agreed they are great! The art is beautiful. You can space them just a bit more but do not raise. They are at the right height. What would be nice to add is a rug under the table, it will balance the color of the space. The hallway vignette is great do not paint the table. As suggested above add some items with black on the table

    A couple of comments:

Husband’s table is awesome - I wouldn’t change a thing. Love the mirror and wall paper also. Are the mirror and table centered on that wall? It looks like the mirror is and the table may be off center a bit, but it could just be the photo angle. And how much difference is there in the width of the table vs width of mirror? I’m asking because I think the area could potentially benefit from some asymmetry. I love symmetry, but it can get boring if overdone. Currently both the foyer and dining area are all perfectly balanced horizontally, which can result in a “matchy matchy” feel. If there is a big enough difference in the width of the table and mirror, you can center the table on the wall, and offset the mirror to the right so that it’s still fully over the table, but not on center. That allows a tall narrow lamp toward the left end of the table, and some smaller objects displayed on the table such as a framed photo, pretty tray to drop keys in and/or a candle. I would test this out by temporarily pulling the table to the left and experimenting with this effect before moving the mirror. If you like it after living with it for a bit, re-center that table and rehang the mirror further to the right.

About the art - yes, it is too small. There’s too much blank wall. I would do one or two large pieces. Really large. If you like abstract pieces, icanvas.com has thousands of art options that they will print in good quality stretched canvas and frame for a very reasonable price. I just had an order arrive from them - I’m adding a picture so you can see the kind of size you should consider (note that my room is also a work in progress lol - the art is actually sitting on the back of the couch waiting to be hung, the table is no longer there, and my room is also in need of some asymmetry!). Each of these pieces was about $175, which is an amazing price for the size and quality of the pieces.

I forgot to say that a black framed large art piece would relate to the mirror, as well as the legs of the green chairs. And about adding other pieces with the same color scheme - I wouldn’t recommend it. The wall would benefit much more from larger art than more smaller pieces. Also, I’m assuming that the art and the green chairs relate to colors elsewhere in the same general space. If not, I would look for art that has an apple green in it to relate to the chairs (even a little bit is ok) and also has the colors that appear elsewhere in the larger space. And consider options for how to help the green chairs relate to the other chairs. Right now they have no common element with the table and chairs. Perhaps recover the wooden chair seats with a fun fabric that has the green in it.

Please don’t take any of this as a criticism of the space - it’s not intended that way at all. A house is a journey and most of us are only partially there - I know I am for sure 😊!

I agree with others that the 2 pieces want to be a bit further apart but otherwise the room looks great. I don’t like having rugs under dining tables generally, but if you end up wanting one, I think I plain neutral/natural jute with a black border would be best if you can find one in the perfect size.

If that were my console, mirror, wallpaper and houseplant, I wouldn’t change a thing but I would add some number of succulent cacti (aeonium/tree houseleek) in a row on the table

Also, you might keep your eye out for the perfect blue glass platter or tray for a table centerpiece. A solid color or a fusion glass design could work. Maybe that wouldn’t suit your vision at all, but looking at your photos i was thinking I would put a piece of glass with mainly blue in the center of the table

None of these are exactly what I would hope to find, but to give you an idea

Entry looks great. Dining has some proportion problems. The art is great but too small for size of table and wall. But let’s try a few things. Can you remove a leaf from the table? Or add two more wood chairs? Two wood chairs on each side of table would help. While I like the sputnik light fixture it too is one size too small for room and table. You might be able to find some plug in wall sconces in modern look to put either side of art work or above art.

Rough mock up. Offset low Ikebana arrangement for table. There are smaller art lights that would also be worth looking for. A simple glass piece might work for the table.

Fwiw, i vote no lights over the art, if it‘s up for a vote.

How about larger art and fixture. The art in dining room might work better over sofa.

Better yet get art that is more mud-century modern. Art is very personal so you have to decide. A set of 4 picking up black from entry mirror and green from host chairs (love those!) and arrange the 4 pieces to repeat shape of table.

Ok I truly am not going to pick a fight with flo and we all agree it is your house to be happy in. I see nothing wrong with your choice of art, either it’s size, style, its location in the dining room -- niente! It is art and the great thing about the room you photographed to show us is that it doesn’t look decorated. It looks like your home and you seem like an interesting person!

I even regret suggesting something for a centerpiece because I think I might buy something to put there and then change my mind.

I think eventually you will add to the room. But if you don’t, it is very appealing as is.

I think your rooms look great. If you like the art there, keep it.

Love your green chairs with everything! You have a great sense of style.

A rug would make a big difference. Just examples here, the scale isn’t exact (you’d want a bigger size):

My husband built only the little console table, but he would love to think someone gave him credit for the dining table. :) The table is old school Arhaus from beginning 2000's time frame. I would to update this table but alas, that involves $$$$$$$$.

Thank you to all of you for your awesome ideas! I am taking a lot of these suggestions to heart and will see what I can pull together moving forward.

Oh, i mis read, sorry not much help here on the decor, but following and wanted to tell you :)

One more vote for spacing the paintings apart just a little bit! They are a perfect height but a few more inches between them will fill the space better. Otherwise everything looks awesome 👌🏻

Although I really like the art, I agree with Flo. They are too small for for the wall IMO. Since you asked if they were, I believe that you must think so too.

BeverlyFLADeziner, love your suggestion for her space. The Osage Oranges caught my attention. In my neck of the woods we call them Horse Apples. I go to the field every fall to collect them for decor in my house, they are beautiful and smell wonderful!

Or better use these art works in different room.

I have no help to add about the art but I do love the colorful rug @celery showed I the last post. Something dramatic with that gorgeous green in it will tie the room together. Your dining table is stunning! And the green chairs are a happy surprise ( most dining rooms have all chairs the same).
