Cap off sink drain for weekend bathroom work?

Yesterday I removed a vanity and sink to prep for a mini remodel. I took off the p trap and set it down in the garage to clean out and put a piece of plastic and rubber band over the wall drain. I meant to clean it out and put it back, but it was late last night and I forgot. This morning I noticed water on the floor but I wanted to quickly mark the wall around it before I put the p trap back on. By the time I was done 15 minutes later I was sick. The room doesn’t smell really bad so I didn’t even make the connection until I started throwing up. I thought sewer gas problems happen over longer periods of time, like days or weeks of a disconnected drain or dry p trap. I’ve never heard of sewer gas problems from one night. Is this because I removed the p-trap? Or did I make it worse by covering the wall fitting but not capping it tightly? My daughter did shower in a different bathroom this morning, could that have caused it? I can’t really find anything about this online aside from major plumbing problems or drain smells but I think I don’t know what to look for!

How do I make sure any gas has dissipated and it doesn’t happen again during the remodel? This bathroom has an exhaust fan but it does not have a dedicated hvac intake or return. I’m not doing the plumbing myself but I’m supposed to do the electrical and blocking for the wall mount vanity before the plumber comes next week. He’s just installing the vanity and connecting the sink and faucet and now I’m a little freaked out - I would have done it myself if he wasn’t already coming for a bigger project on a different bathroom.
