family room/office

Hi - I am trying to figure out what to do with my family room. I’m the attached picture we are keeping the couch along the window which also has an ottoman that comes with it, and we are also definitely keeping the TV. Everything else can either stay or go. The gray couch is likely going to another room and we are thinking about hanging the TV on the wall. I also think my “office” will go in this room which will be a desk and chair that will go next to the couch that is under the window. Any thoughts on layout and design options for this room? I want it to have a cozy feel.

Also excuse the mess! We just moved in and so any thoughts on window treatments are also welcome. We’d also be open to moving the TV to the wall across from the couch.

What is the door to the left of the window in your first photo? What are the measurements of the sofa you're keeping and the measurements of the walls that have doorways, actually measurements of all the walls--most interested in the measurements of current TV wall from left side to doorway.

That door leads outside to the side of the house. We are open to blocking it as we don’t really see ourselves using it that much. The wall the TV is on is 8 feet 4 inches from the door to the the corner. The couch is 8 feet long. The overall dimensions of the room are about 11’4” x 19’ 9”.

Desk on wall where tv is now and add an extra chair at the window end, which I’m sure would be handy.

TV across from couch, placed on a long unit for extra storage.

If you need a play area, add a l-shaped desk on far wall by window and use the larger corner for toys and storage.

Don’t forget a large rug and cushions. Enjoy your new home!

Exits have their purpose in emergencies. Make sure this one can really be spared before blocking it.

Setups for desks/storage behind floating sofa.

In regards to the door, I’d paint it black and add a rattan blind to enhance that end of room.

One more idea for your door--hang a framed, full-length, attractive bulletin board on the door if you turn the far end of the room into an office. Arrange family photos neatly along with work-related items, photo calendar.

Opposite tv's 8' wall - is there chance sofa could go there? Personally I like facing it.

If you don't use the door, maybe.

Or -- for chairs and sofas with square armrests. Flexible sides fit most armrests, and it's rigid enough for use as a freestanding tray. Overall item measures 16 5/8" long x 13 1/4" wide x 5" high. TRAY measures 6" wide by 13.25" long, sides hang 5" down the armrest.

Put the sofa and tv across from each other, with a console under the tv, leaving an aisle, and use the shorter, back wall for the desk area.
