Wall TV in kitchen looks worse than I expected. Can you help pls?

What height should this TV be insalled at? I am not loving the look, but do like the idea of having a TV to watch while cooking. We are going to be using a different mount that will allow the TV to be closer to the wall. The electricians are going to move the plug so it can be concealed.

Do you think it will look better if the TV is lowered to more picture height? Any ways to make this look a little better (aside from flatter and with plug hidden)? I was set to remove the whole thing and forget the TV in the kitchen, but I have been out voted. Excuse the construction mess!

@User Thank you. Our style is transitional leaning towards traditional. So, not industrial. I do like the Paris Cafe or even something from Montreal Quebec (which looks like a Canadian Paris with similar cafes). If we move the TV elsewhere, I would look for a cafe pic like your insp pic.

    @LilDesignWorks

Thank you very much for your great idea and understanding my desire to incorporate the sconces (and that the family wants the TV kept in that convenient for viewing location). Thank you for your floating shelf idea! We can work with that.

    @nhb22

I like that inspiration picture!! Thank you for that idea and happy that both LilDesign and you were thinking a similar solution.

The only other spot we can move the TV to and still be in the kitchen would be a side wall. I will post a picture of a less good location, but perhaps more aesthetically pleasing.

An alternate spot for the TV is on the wall beside the freezer. It could be seen while prepping/cooking at the island, but not when seated at the stools (which seems to be a feature that is desirable by by teens). DH and I get the final say on where the TV lands.

We have ours mounted to clear the faucets and we have stools facing the TV so the height works for us I think part of your issue is that it is not in the actual kitchen but more the eating space so maybe pst a floor plan .

@LilDesignWorks and @nhb22 and others, if we go with the compromise posted by Lil and nhb above, what kind of mount would you suggest? The one we have does not sit very flat against the wall as can be seen in our original photos. Also, would we still be needing to move the plugs (the covered one is for low voltage/internet) or can they be hidden behind the shelf?

@ontariomom 🤗 where you have it now is a better location! Select a shelf and enjoy:)

You would need to move this plugs, or your TV would be too low and off-set to the sconces.

I posted two recommendations for hanging hardware in my 2nd post to you, near the beginning of the thread.

The shelf can be mounted just above the 2 outlets as my drawing so it will visually make them less prominent. The power outlet for the tv can be moved slightly of desired or possible, to fall behind the tv. A narrow floating shelf is best.

Thank you @nhb22 I will look for your earlier post.

@LilDesignWorks We will plan to move the plug and low voltage outlet. There are also two switches there (one for sconces and one for island lights) that need to stay (and don't bother me as they are lower down). Thanks.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting Thank you for your inspiration picture. In terms of TV viewing while both sitting and prepping on the island where the TV is is ideal. There is no other spot other than the side wall (also posted but seen by posters as less good). There are very few walls.

@nhb22 I've looked through this post several times and I don't see your second post where you posted the mounting hardware you were recommending.

Great! That's what I meant. The switches remain under the shelf and they are sort of symmetrical which is good. The outlets above the shelf going behind the tv is perfect

Found this dark wood floating shelf (the island is dark wood and the floor is medium brown hardwood oak). The perimeter cabinets are off white. I hope this can be installed with out the typical supports needed at the framing stage given the studs are boarded. https://www.wayfair.ca/storage-organization/pdp/three-posts-elin-pine-solid-wood-floating-shelf-c004008236.html

Hmmm...I see it! It's below the photo that I posted of black and white art work, plus a clock, that is surrounding a TV.

If you are looking to make a floating shelf yourself here are some resources https://www.wikihow.com/Hang-Floating-Shelves

If you want to use a stained wood and don't mind the urban rustic look you can always make a beautiful simple shelf using a 2x2 and a 2x4 or 2x6. Cut the 2x2 to desired length, stain and mount it into the wall studs. Use the 2x4 or 2x6 as the actual shelf, secured into the 2x2 with vertical screws. Since there will be virtually no weight on this shelf you can also simply use brackets

So the floating shelf posted above comes in 36 inch wide (and also 44 inch wide). It is 8 inches deep. The TV has legs (that have been removed but can be reattached). Do we need a mounting bracket or can the TV not just sit on the floating shelf?

  • PRO

Leave the tv on the wall. The shelf may not be strong enough to hold the tv AND the tv legs are usually much deeper than you want the shelf to be. Ideally tv mounted on the wall will only take 4-5" in depth

@nhb22 That is so weird. I can't imagine why I can't see that post you are referring, to. I have looked many, many times for your second post that you are referencing. I am unsure if I need a mounting bracket anyway. Can the TV not just sit on the shelf as the TV has legs (that were removed)?

    Some pics of a shelf

You can buy these kind of shelves or make them only as deep as the tv sticking out 5"?

    ontariomom thanked LilDesignWorks

The legs are not that deep on the TV and within the depth of an 8 inch floating shelf (if we go with that one). However, I don't want to feel like someone will bump the TV and everything will come crashing down. I think the max weight of the shelf is 30 lbs (the TV is probably not heavier than that). So we will look for a mount. @nhb22 can you repost the mount you were suggesting? I am sorry that your other post is not visable to me.

@LilDesignWorks Would you recommend we go with this shelf in the 36 inch width or 44 inch width. Is 8 inches too deep?https://www.wayfair.ca/storage-organization/pdp/three-posts-elin-pine-solid-wood-floating-shelf-c004008236.html?piid=317105208%2C317105212

Or as I mentioned above mount s 2x2 on the wall (in the studs) and build a nice stained box like the wayfair shelf around it

I am doing something like this in our breakfast banquette. The TV will sit above the end of the table between a wall and a window, although the wall area and TV are much smaller than shown here. I love the B&W look!

I purchased a bracket like THIS on Amazon to hang or TV flat against the wall. It's neat cleat system. You can get a larger one like THIS.

I like the mentioned idea of perhaps putting a narrow shelf below the TV so it looks like the TV is sitting on the shelf. I could do one in black to blend in with the B&W theme.

The shelf should be as per this pic

As wide as the measurement includind the 2 sconces. And only as deep as the projection of the tv of the wall

@LilDesignWorks We will look into the Wayfair option. I did not spend long looking to see if there was a darkwood one. We are experiencing reno fatique in a big way as so much of this massive project was DIY. So, finding something ready to go on the wall is our goal. We will seek out one that is 5 iches deep vs the 8 inch one I found.

The width from outside sconces to outside sconce is 45.5. So we might need to make our our custom shelf. You enjoy your Saturday as well!

Here is an idea using one or two ikea shelves, it could look great

One shelf up and one shelf down to create the minishelf

    ontariomom thanked LilDesignWorks

That is nice looking and Ikea is local for us. I am not in love with the quality of their products, but you can't beat the fact that the length is ideal for our project!!

@ontariomom - just wanted you to know that I cannot see @nhb22 post with the mounting hardware either! I looked through this entire thread at each & every post & picture!

Have you considered getting "The Frame" TV? It looks like art of your choosing when it is off.

    the frame

Mark Bischak. I like the compromise suggested above. Given I am the one that does almost all of the cooking, it would be nice to have a TV in kitchen. The compromise posted above with the floating shelf, TV lower and plugs moved to be hidden behind the TV seems like a great solution all round.

@Mimou-GW I will investigate this option. Even, if we go with the current TV now to keep costs down, I would love to replace with one like you posted later.

    @ontariomom

Question -- when the TV is on and being viewed, will someone be sitting in the chair at the short end of the island? I ask because if the answer is "yes," the screen may not be viewable by the folks sitting in the chairs on the long side of the island.

We will test that out. I don't expect all 5 stools to be in use when the TV is on. So we can always keep the stools (there will be 2) off limits if the TV is being viewed.

You could build a niche in the wall to recess the TV. When we renovated our master bath we recessed a large medicine cabinet with an integrated electrical outlet. Seems you could do that here too. It isn't complicated.

Painting the wall a dark colour will make the TV "disappear" and will accentuate the sconces. This will work whether or not you use a shelf and/or recessed niche. http://blog.sanus.com/why-your-tv-wall-is-practically-made-for-the-dark-wall-trend

Forget the TV. Competing dual TV noise with open concept is crazy making. If you want a screen, that’s what an iPad is for.

    ontariomom thanked User

@partim We did build several niches. Unfortunately this wall cannot accommodate it as it was a main artery for low voltage walls and other things. It is also a structural wall. Great thought though.

@Thanks Pete. We have not found the noise bad as the home is large enough that people can go off to their spaces. I prefer a TV to an ipad for watching while cooking, but I understand your point.

@LilDesignWorks @nhb22 My husband is planning out the TV shelf now. He wondered if the total width of the single shelf should be from centre of sconce to centre of sconce but not as wide as outer sconce to out sconce. He has the top of the TV like it was drawn, but the bottom of the TV is about 4-5 inches from the top of the light switches. We do need to use the light switches and don't want to hit our knuckles on the shelf. What do you think?

In that case, by all means, go with center to center. Come back a post photos!

Could we also make the shelf go from the inside of sconce to inside of sconce? One of those switches will eventually have a scene control on it (when we can afford this). I worry if it is covered by the shelf, it will not be able to be used for a scene control).

That you for the visual, nhb22. I think I prefer that, especially to preserve the functionality of the light switches.
