Remodelled 18th century apartment, furniture tips needed please!

Just moved into this beautiful apartment but I'm totally stumped on furniture colour, particularly for the sofa. I need a sofa, some armchairs (picture 1) dining table and dining chairs (picture 2) for now. The walls are a warm beige, the dark hardwood floor has warm undertones. Do I also need to pick a sofa in a warm colour? Obviously, we have dogs so white or very light colours are really not appropriate for us :)

PS I really love the floor so I don't want to use really big area rugs if possible.

Congratulations! What a fabulous apartment! Are you in England?

I think you can use any color furniture/decor you want, cool or warm ... or both. You have a wonderful neutral backdrop to work with, I don’t think anything could look bad in there.

What styles do you like? Do you have any inspiration pictures saved? How was your last home decorated?

I’d love to see how it comes along. :)

I agree with the above. This is a beautiful beautiful space. So much awesome detailing. You can really go with any color furniture. I guess I’d go blue if you don’t want anything white or cream.
I actually am picturing a specific couch I’ve seen in homegoods. I’ll try to look around for that or something similar.

For the dining area. You need super traditional. I’d probably do a Louis style round back chair.

Again will look around for some options for you in a bit!
    Good luck!!

IMO I would do white leather actually white cowhide to stand up the dogs I have white cowhide furniture and 3 huge dogs it has stood up for 14 yrs and still looks new . I think we need to know a bit about your style for sure I can see really contemporary style in there or a complete paris apartment look. That kitchen in your idea book says contemporary so I will comment in that direction. I would do 2 large white sofas a soft blue or green for chairs and a fabulous wood table with gjhost cahirs for the DR A nice wood coffee table same wood as the dining table but the dining table in an oval and the coffee table square.I think a look like this would really work. BTW where are you

I'd start combing through the pages of Elle Decor and Architectural Digest to get ideas. Find projects that are based in New York, Paris, and London for inspiration. Personally, in these old buildings I like going with a more eclectic mix of stuff:

What a gorgeous space! I love the ideas, above, of mixing very modern with elevated traditional. VERY sophisticated, urban. Bold Art on the walls. Honestly, Your dogs deserve it! 😉

Thank you everyone for your comments, how helpful they are! I was leaning towards modern french and/or art deco styles as there are some interesting art deco elements to the building. Although I'm in Estonia so also having real trouble sourcing furniture that can be delivered here. I was considering an ultra modern sofa with more traditional style armchairs and then maybe a dramatic round dining table marble top with chrome legs (see pic) although maybe I should go traditional in the dining area as suggested. Bit overwhelming tbh! Definitely want some bold, abstract art (maybe with jewel tones deep purple, blue etc) Below I've included a little mood board I made with furniture I can easily get locally, as well as some inspo pics. The pink sofa is my potential wild card choice :O

Let the chandeliers determine how to use each area of the room….one for living, one for dining.

Congratulations on your lovely apartment. You did mention that selections are limited, but your choices don’t seem to line up with your inspiration rooms and also I don’t think they are eclectic enough. Suggest pouring through additional inspiration pictures (link below may help) to identify how you want the room to feel, portraying your personality and then focus on how pieces are combined. I think the pink couch is unexpected and is a statement, add non matching tables, and unexpected chairs. Large mirror and art as well. Perhaps you can find some great pieces second hand. Take your time and chose the perfect pieces vs trying to furnish immediately.

First measure the size of the elevator if you have one, the stairwell, and the front door And hallway. You might conclude you need to buy furniture you can assemble.

Sounds really worth it to me to get the services of a local designer who can source furniture for you and supervise the delivery?

Don’t you need rugs to protect the floors from the dogs nails?

Maureen I think you hit the nail on the head there, I think I'm going to just focus on getting a neutral sofa for now so we have something to sit on, then I can take my time to do the rest. I can see what you mean that my mood boards don't come close to the inspiration photos. I think I'm trying to do it all in one go and making too many compromises so that I can get the pieces quickly and locally. I'm going to take my time from now on. Thank you for the link and the photos, they are spot on. Especially love that dining room set up...

Ital mover - Thank you for the photos, I love the combinations of different items. Great inspiration. I tried to contact local designers but I guess they're all really busy as I got no replies! I will have some smaller rugs but I just love the floors and I want to minimise rug coverage. I've always had hardwood floors in previous places, thankfully the dogs nails don't mark them at all. No one will be using the elevator in this building for furniture delivery :D (Believe it or not that elevator actually works too) but the stairs are nicely proportioned so I think it will be fine but for sure I will remember to check with the delivery people.

Glad that I took a look at this thread. I was green with envy when I saw your apartment. From the small glimpse outside of your window, I knew that you did not live in the U.S. Estonia is a lovely, lovely place. I have been to Tallinn. Lucky girl!

I would not want to cover up those floors, either. Do you have any idea what they are? They remind me of our heart pine stained dark.

Good luck with your apartment, and your dogs.

I once had a pink sofa! Loved it! Not sure I wouldn't splurge for the sofa and sit on crates or folding chairs until the right pieces can be sourced to work with it.

I remembered my niece’s navy velvet couches in her London home. They can be mixed with so many different looks/combinations. I’d start your couch search, which will help determine everything else. Navy feels classic, modern and warm all at the same time. I think it would be lovely in your space and shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Well, I picked the sofa today I almost went for blue velvet but then I remembered I have a white/beige dog and thought better of it :) We went for this moss green velvet with black legs instead. In the style of the pink one below. It wasn't a colour I had even considered but it looks really good IRL and immediately inspired me to think about some black and white accessories. Just 5 more weeks of camping chairs until it arrives...

Nhb22: I am trying to find out the exact spec of the floors from the former owners, hopefully I will know soon as I would like to oil them and bring back the lustre before all the furniture arrives. I know they were oiled previously but nothing else yet.

decoenthusiaste: Thats exactly the plan now, thanks to this thread!

Last night I was thinking about adding some gold mirrors just like that one in the pic when I stumbled across this seemingly amazing and huge antique store right close by, they import antiques and various items from all over europe so thats Saturday sorted! http://www.oldeurope.ee/en I thought some other small gold accents might work too in the living area, like a little small side table or table lamp but the chandeliers are silver...I'm a little concerned about mixing metals. Need to do some research before I attempt that!

My partner has his eye on a pretty stylish leather recliner, much the same cognac colour as that pouffe in the picture, so thats reassuring to think that should actually work with the green couch too :D

I wouldn’t worry too much about mixing metals. You can see in the photo I posted earlier that the silver candelabra is right next to the gold framed mirror. In very old apartments like this it would be normal to have an accretion of heirlooms.

You can see in this photo there are quite a few differing metal finishes in the room. I think if you swapped out the gold chandelier for silver, and did the photos in silver frames the room would work just as well (with a gold curtain rod over the chairs). Cognac leather goes nicely with green velvet sofa here (as does everyone’s favorite IKEA rattan chair.

I think this room would actually look better with a cognac leather chair or some other glow-y hue.

Hmmmm. I was thinking that unless you are a vegan (and you are probably not if you are thinking of bringing a cognac leather recliner into the apartment) what might look just right is to leave the floors absolutely bare, but angle a champagne or mocha-gold cowhide under the sofa to include most of the seating and all of the ottoman, but that’s it.

The awesome place you linked has beautiful rugs (you said you just wanted some accent rugs, not too much floor coverage):

I‘d so love to walk around that store!

Holy moly. That store! And your apartment. :D What a design opportunity. Before shopping, make sure to take good measurements of everything in your space with target measurements for items like mirrors, coffee and side tables, rugs, etc. (Your quick mood boards? I'd nix the idea of that chrome-legged dining table and the wood and iron coffee table is reading too "ordinary" for the space. As others have suggested: be truer to your inspo pics and don't compromise.)

Looking forward to seeing progress pics. Enjoy the process!

Wow! i didn’t see all the latest answers until just now, I guess I turned off my notifications or something…wow thank you guys for all your inputs! So much good stuff here. I still don’t have the couch (maybe next week) but the dining table arrived today, love ❤️

I’ll take another picture tomorrow in daylight. I’m thinking because of the green couch in the same space I’m going to go with black dining chairs. Not too sure of the style though. I also went with a neutral white leather armchair instead of the cognac leather, I’ll take a picture of it in place tomorrow.
