Calycanthus. I don’t know them well enough to say which species.

LOL!! It must be calycanthus season :-) A similar question came up yesterday on another thread HERE on the other side of the country.

It's most likely Calycanthus floridus. The western C. occidentalis also has red flowers. C. has fragrant flowers, C. occidentalis does not. There are many hybrids out there too, some with the Asian species.

Calycanthus occidentalis does indeed have fragrant flowers - a very pleasant ripe, fruity wine-like aroma.

btw, did not mean to imply I thought the OP's shrub was of the western species.....only that it seems to be calycanthus bloom season wherever they are located.

Thank you everyone. With the genus I googled and found a picture like mine and I saw "sweetshrub". That's what it was called when I bought it at Bordine's Nursery in 2005. I couldn't remember the name at all. It has been really happy since the neighbor had the huge old silver maple taken out that was shading it. Now it just gets some shade (a lot less) and it's doubled in size and has lots of brown blooms this year.

I read it somewhere that occidentalis didn't have a fragrance, and I can't find the source, sorry for the wrong steer.
