I just purchase new informal dining room chairs. Room too small

I just purchase new informal dining room chairs. It was a narrow room to start with and I have it paint dark. I will be repainting. My question is, I feel I will chose a light to medium gold, the new chairs are navy blue and gold. Should I use a hi-gloss paint for a larger feel? Should I have a accent wall color? A darker gold on the back wall?

High gloss doesn't make a room feel larger, accent wall will cut room up/making it feel smaller, no to dark gold. Suggest a creamy white. Chairs below are obviously off, but wanted to provide a sense of wall color, lighter art and chandelier.

nothin wrong with an accent color, whatever color dark or gold. When I do an accent color I only use it on the window wall(s)

Keeping the wall that the window(s) light shines on a clean light (White). The natural light refects on the room and makes the space feel good. I say it's a dining room, make it glamorous!

your picture is very tiny when we click on it.

    upload a larger size.

what makes the room look small is the oversized table and chairs. paint won't change that

But load a picture that we can actually view so we can see what else you can do

I agree to load the pic so it can be enlarged and IMO unless you had the walls redone by a expert drywall finisher never high gloss paint it show every tiny imperfection . BTW post the size of that space. Are the chairs you show the new "informal" ones ?

    Is this better

    Are the chairs returnable?

It will be hard to make them work unless you can replace the table with one that is more narrow. The wings take up a lot of visible space.

so, here's what I'd do if you really want that table and those chairs.

forget a gold wall color. Go w/Swiss Coffee. you could always bring in a gold chandelier.

both of these are swiss coffee. this room gets a ton of light, so it looks lighter.

yours would look more like this shade w/your lighting

paint out the baseboard trim in a nice white. Simply White would be a perfect choice.

right now the eyes are drawn down to the dark tile and dark trim. please, no gold. The table has enough gold in it. the tiles have enough tan. the chairs are dark, the baseboard is dark, and the window trim is dark. (I'd paint those white too but that's up to you)

Here are some other off whites that lean on the yellow side. (forget Drift of Mist and Snowbound)

You're going to have to prime the wall anyway, so why not grab a quart of the swiss coffee and paint it on one wall.

I'd also remove the heavy chairs and buffet at the one end.

remove the small picutres and find one large art piece to go on the one wall.

I,d prob do a creamy type of rug under the table to further lighten the space

Get a different light. The light is ADDING to the scale problem. I would use a LONG light, not a round one. It should follow the axis of the room. A great example is the photo @Maureen posted with the white walls. See how the fixture is longer than it is wide?

The light should also be a light color.

I would recommend returning the chairs and using something not upholstered. These ones take up too much space: it's going to be hard to get in and sit down.

NOTHING informal about those chairs!! Most table/chairs are approximately the same size but some sets give off a more compact vibe. Since they are brand new perhaps you can swap them for something more informal, compact, sleek. I am assuming the table is a family piece you had. How many will you seat? Even a bench on one side up against the wall would give you more physical space.

You need 36-42" of clear space around the table so there is room for chair scoot and sit space. It is also helpful if someone wants to exit the table without disturbing others. I only like accent walls in two situations; on a plain wall that has no other architectural feature, or on a fireplace wall where there is nothing but a fireplace there. Nothing about your table and chairs looks "informal" to me. the room, maybe; the furniture, definitely not.
