Buying new cheaper sofa vs better quality used sofa.

Due to the foam shortage, none of the couches that I liked in store are going to be available for it seems like around 6 months. I don't have a couch in my apartment, and want to buy a couch now rather than waiting for one of the couches I want to come in. My options seem to be:

Buy a cheaper couch from Ikea/Raymour and Flanigan that can deliver quick

Buy a used nicer couch for a similar price (Crate and Barrel and Room and Board seem to be the most available used couches in my area).

Which would you recommend? It seems like the new ready to ship couches are not that great quality, but am concerned with buying a used couch due to safety, and I think I would have to get it professionally cleaned before using.

There are lots of folks who don't mind buying used furniture. I'm not one of them.

Consider buying something new that you can use in another area of your apartment to hold you over - like chairs.

Buy new from IKEA, they have some really nice furniture. With used furniture you face possibility of odors from previous owners who may have had pets, or smoked or the like etc...

You can find some real bargains in used. Often, the listings will state not only the condition but also thinks like 'non-smokers', 'no pets', etc. I got a really nice FlexSteel sofa in excellent condition for $60 used. And it was a style that I liked. I had been looking for a new sofa for 2-3 years but hated the styling on so many of them.

I think it would depend on the couch in question.

In general used uphostered furniture is a huge bargain. I think if one goes to the home and inspects in person, one would get a good idea of the kind of household it was. If is is stained or odiferous, then don't buy it.

In general - not always - a good quality sofa is simply more comfortable to sit on. And often the fabrics used are more beautiful. That of course depends on the sofa.

Of course it is easier to go to IKEA and order a sofa versus taking some time to track down used sofas which may or may not pan out. You probably wouldn't be able to take home a sofa the same day unless you were incredibly lucky in terms of finding a used style you like.

I would assume that these sofas are place holders while you wait for the sofa . you actually want to come into inventory.

Depends on how long you're going to keep it. I get an custom couch from Ethan Allen for over $2000, but I plan on keeping it for a good long time. My last one lasted more than ten years, but it was a used mid century modern one that I had reupholstered. I also sleep on it (when I fall asleep on the couch in from of the tv), so it needs to be super comfy. My Ethan Allen pillows are useless (feels like they have rocks in them - just decorative) so keep that in mind when you buy a couch. I use the couch bolsters for pillows when I sleep on it. My sister buys a really cheap couch every few years. Her cats rip it up and then she covers it with some throws.

I do not think there is a custom sofa on earth for 2K. I do not like used upholstered furniture I don't care what the previous owners say . I have often used Ikea for clients sometimes in really used spaces and never had an issue. I also think you never buy a sofa without sitting on it,

Costco! I bought a “cloud dupe” it’s awesome. Less than 4k. Was delivered in 10 days.

I love used but not for upholstery. IKEA!
