Why can't you add a little soil on top? Isn't there room? If not, not much you can do, repotting might be worse than leaving alone. Cover the roots with some paper towels might help keep the roots from drying out.

A photo would be useful. Cucumbers are one of the plants that are fine having extra soil piled up around the stems so I’d do that.

Definitely do not try repotting - that could be disastrous!

I would simply add some more potting soil or compost to cover the roots - as floral suggests - assuming you meant that the roots are showing on the soil surface. If they're poking out through the bag's sides & bottom, you could try setting the bag inside a larger container and adding more soil to that, or simply leave alone and allow them to 'air prune'.

I literally just asked this question to my gardening group yesterday. And was wondering if I should add some soil on top to protect the roots. Cucumbers have horizontal top roots as well as vertical tap roots. This is a photo of my potted cucumbers and exposed roots.

As Floral said - Top it up. That means add more dirt to the top.

Of course, if you top it up, in a few weeks you may assume that the roots will STILL be coming out of the soil. Air-pruning works. But floral is right. If your plant bags are seriously underfilled, your cukes are trying to tell you something.

No, the plant isn't sitting low in the bag at all but Thank you everyone who answered. I'll add more soil in the morning.

Any chance of a picture? I don't understand how the pot can be full to the brim with that amount of mix.
