You're right that those are harming birds (and insects like bees). I think this is an additional problem based on the assumption that people studying the illness would be aware of it. Maybe not though.

tsugajunkie, are you going to discontinue feeding wild birds? What are your thoughts on the pesticide poisoning?

Anybody have any comments about feeding or not feeding? I'm in SouthEast Michigan, very close to Ohio, which is apparently a state that is affected by a bird infection. What are you doing?

I'd stop feeding. I was filling a small bird bath regularly until I heard this problem reached my state. It was hard for me to do since i knew birds were enjoying the water, but I thought they were better off needing to look for water than take a chance spreading disease.

I'd say for anybody not able to bring themselves to stop, become a clean freak about it and wash things everyday. I still think stopping is better.
