Exterior paint/ design ideas for traditional house w/ light brown roof

last modified: 4 years ago

Hi! We are getting close to to updating our exterior and changing out windows. I need to pick colors + windows and decide what to do on the outside. I like contrast looks (soft white with dark charcoal trim or charcoal house with white trim), but I'm not sure what to do here with this light brown/ tan roof? Any ideas on colors for house, trim and shutter color? Stone can go but I am also open to ideas of dying/painting them. Window color (size has to be the same)? Only thing that has to stay is our drab sad roof.

Thank you jck910. I do like that but I’m not sure how it will look with our roof? Also open to other color schemes. There are a lot of craftsman in our area and also flipped/ contemporary homes. I just don’t want an orange or red door. I like subtle and/ or contrasting colors. I am more attracted to the cooler colors for the most part, which is the issue when I have a warm roof.

What yo have now looks quite good. the main color is pretty, trim color coul go a bit darker if you chose one of the deeper stone colors. if yo choose to paint the doors i could imagine a deep, earthy green, not necessarily as brown as the sw olive grove in this palette

I like the white/cream you have on the stucco, and would use a deep olive green for the shutters and trim.

Thank you @lisaam and @calidesign! I appreciate your ideas. I am still not loving our current color. Feels depressing to me somehow..but maybe with green as an accent it would help? What would you do with the rock?

Thank you houssaon! Visuals help so much. Although I think the colors work, I think I'm realizing I am not a fan of brown. So I think I would want something different for the shutters and trim?

I would leave the rock as it is. It is barely noticable with your landscaping, and painted rock almost always cheapens the look.

Colors on monitors aren't always as they appear. The pics of the front of house give the color a beige look while the last pic looks more creamy. Which is the true color?

If you want to go the direction of lighter body of house and darker windows/trim as long as you stay in the darker bronze tones it will work with the roof. There are some dark tones in the rock that you could use to pull colors from if you keep the stone. Since the "front" door is recessed I would pick a color that stands out to draw the eye and let people know where to enter the home.

@calidesign Thank you for reference photos. I am such a visual person and those are so helpful. I hate the color of the rock, but at some point this home will become a rental, so I don't want to change things that don't need changing just to suit my personal taste. Appreciate your point of view. @misecretary Great and important question! Definitely more of a beige! I have added additional pictures above that hopefully give you a better idea of the color of the stucco and the rocks. The trim & windows are all the same color as the shutters. I am not sure if that should change in the future. @Creative Visual Concepts, Kevin Strader Thanks Kevin! Great tip on the door. I will check your website out.

@misecretaryHi! Did you have anymore feedback now seeing better pics of the house color and rocks?

Hi, sorry I disappeared. My favorite combo is a creamy white with medium to dark brown trim.

The trim from photo #1 with the color white in photo #2. Not sure if either brown would work with your stone and roof though. Hope these help !
