It will probably depend on if you are going to use a rug under the dining room table. Here are two dining rooms we designed for clients:

Oooh I love these !! Where are the tables from may I ask ?

I would say number two, but not with those chairs. You need something more elegant.

Be sure you remove those shutters, which look especially odd on only the bottom window...

I will keep my shutters this post was about a dining set . Shutter advice not needed. Thank you

I think the first and third have rich, warm toned woods that will make your vinyl floors look more fake in comparision. The second option could work, but I particularly like the last option, and would have the legs painted with just the top of the table stained. Also consider what types of wood you have in any adjacent spaces that can be seen from this room.

I changed my mind. I did these mock ups and I found that the light one seemed best. I can do better mock ups with better pictures of the options. And, I think we need more info too. The strong wood tones fight with the flooring. A rug will help. But not sure exactly what styling you want. So at least for now, ti think the gray one works best with different chairs.

The table would run from windows across room.

@Flo Mangan thanks so much for your photoshop!! I am actually buying a rug to break it up ..it’s definitely going to be a vintage rug probably more so on the neutral side …I actually found this table at world market and found it gorgeous …I would like to see in person …that’s why I was wondering if I should go for more of a cool but with a rug it might be ok no matter what

I would avoid table bases that only allow you to use two chairs on the long sides. Look for ones with a different style of legs so you at least have the option of 3 chiars on each side when you want them.

I have seen that World Market table in our local store and it is a great look and tremendous value. It would cost 3 times that price to have it custom made. Then you can put your money toward great chairs. If you are keeping your current wall color it will work beautifully. A lighter more neutral color would be stunning. Of course, you need a nice new chandelier and make sure it hangs 30-33” above the table. Most hang too high! Especially when ceilings are high. Don’t do that. Get shopping! Inventories are low.

Thank you ! Yes I’m going to look at it in person first then just place my order !! Half the battle would be finding the right vintage rug haha I’ve always wanted a colorful one but have to make sure it doesn’t clash ….. I’m excited about this table !! I’m hoping 78 inches is not too short a width since it’s a huge dining room. I will definitively be replacing the chandelier as well

Honestly this is best decided once you know the exact chairs you are using. Most woods work and mixing woods is fine… but the table and chair relationship is key (don’t forget the chair leg finish if that’s the only wood on it). If you are going for an all neutral look with upholstered chairs then the chair fabric and paint / rug relationship is key.

If you post the width and length of your dining room, I can tell you for sure what size table is best.

Once I’m home I’ll def put up the measurements

So width is 12 feet by 9 inches and length is 13 feet by 9 inches

Ok. That’s a nice size room. But I will do layout tomorrow! How many people do you want to seat at dining table?

OK-newbie. Here is scale drawing. Each square equals 1 square foot. My main concern about this table is the legs. Make sure you test how chairs will fit between the legs on the sides especially. I think the chairs need to be 18-22” max wide. But you can get chairs in the store and try out arrangements. If you want to seat more, the legs will be a problem. Hope this helps you avoid mistakes. This size table is about as big as this room can hold. You could get a table that extends on end to seat more if you need that. But you need space at opening of room for that expansion. Chairs need 3’ from table edge to wall for easy push back and to allow guests to walk around behind if they need to leave table. Hope you find the perfect table.

Thank you so much !!! I think I’m going to look into that table from world market …and go from there. I really loved these chairs from Article but I will keep searching ….

Chairs with arms are nice but wide and arms must slide under apron on table.

When you go shopping take a tape measure and measure from floor to bottom of lowest edge of table. Then measure any chair to make sure it will slide under table.

The chair width is going to be an issue. There is only 48" between those legs, and you need several inches of space next to each table leg as well as several inches between the 2 chairs. I'd only use 18-19" wide chairs, max, which may be hard to find. Also, try out a chair on the end to see if you can sit close enough to the table to be functional without having to put your feet over that base.

My house is more on the neutral side but wondering if I can away with a colorful rug such as in this picture 🤔

It’s the “whole composition” that make this work. Notice the dark blue wall. That brings balance to the rug. Notice golds that are used also in lighting and accessories. You could duplicate this look in your dining room for sure. Dining rooms are kind of stand alone spaces but you need some references of the colors in adjoining rooms. Can be small touches such as a vase with blue and whites. A pillows with some touches of blue and red. Some things like that.

I changed a few things that wouldn’t work in your room. But you could do something like this. I put a unique wall art on left wall because you can’t do the fireplace and mirror on back far wall. But it helps you visualize the possibilities.
