How to fix the color contrast of bathroom floor and shower wall?

My husband and I recently built our first home together through a builder. We were a bit clueless at the design center appointment. We messed up and picked out all gray tone for the shower while our bathroom/house floor is beige. Now we can’t help but notice a huge contrast between the floor and the shower everyday. Not sure what to do at this point to fix the look. Is there anything we could do to make things blend a little better?

Sorry that the "design center" didn't do anything to prevent you from making this decision. Short of tearing out the floor and putting in new tile to compliment the shower I would get a runner to cover as much of the floor as possible.

The quality looks great so congrats on the new house! Shame the design center didn’t weigh in as that’s the role they are supposed to play!
Try some Turkish rugs for sale on Etsy. You have to pick thru them a bit but some of the sellers have some great stuff at fair prices and you’d find colors which can either tie together the two or distract from the differences.

I am not good at color but I think if you pick a greige color found in your tiles and paint the walls, that should help.

Just get a long white runner to use on the floor next to the shower, and use white or another color for your towels. Using the gray rug on the beige floor and the gray towels just highlights the difference. It's not that bad as they are all neutral colors.

I agree that it looks fine. You have a nice, new house. Get a runner with some pizzazz and enjoy!!!

Hi Kayla - congratulations on your new home! I actually think the colors look very nice together. To change it a bit, if you like, add a runner like others have said. I’m looking for my next home now and will definitely be mixing warm and cool tones. By the way, my son and DIL just built their first home. They faced the same stress with the build center and ended up making a couple choices they didn’t like when installed, at first. They like them much better now and don’t even think of them. Don’t beat yourself up over this. It’s beautiful! Enjoy your new place.

I see why that would bug you. It isn’t that bad though. I would try to get a stain in gray for the grout on the floor. Just that hint of intentional gray in the floor could pull it together. If you add a rug w both gray and beige in it it will look maybe a bit unconventional but nice.

One, I agree with everyone who said it’s not as bad as you might think. Two, I agree with @Charles Bingley that a runner with both colors, plus white will tie it all together. Plus white towels. All of it looks very good quality, so that’s a blessing. At another time, when you’re not so stressed, you can rip up the bathroom tile to be a better match, but I suspect you’ll learn to love it. The grey grout idea is time consuming, so I wouldn’t do that right away either. But it’s a thought.

I have this rug (Ivory) and it carries both the beige ivory and bits of gray. Some pics show it better so do scroll. It’s a beautiful rug in person. All different sizes.

    Congratulations on your new home!!!

I think this is the same rug:

Do a search for grey and beige runners and all the other rug websites will pop up.

I would do gray walls and some towels maybe like this , I hate rugs on bathroom floors but you do need a mat for infront of the shower .

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - I was thinking a small rug (2x3) in front of the shower. Love the towels you found!

While removing the grout and replacing it would be prohibitively expensive there is an alternative. You can get grout stain pens and just run it over the grout like a magic marker. It about $30. For $30 it’s worth a try.

I have to agree with you. Not only is the color off, but the style of the tile doesn’t coordinate with the shower.

Personally, I would have it done over at some point in the future.

Since it is a bathroom, it is not pressing, it is just disappointing.

Live and learn. Everything has to be questioned!

Lots of good options offered for you to try and see if you can still live with it.

Wall paint can fix a lot of clashing problems among installed elements in a room. Do some reading on color theory, and you will see how one color can adjust the undertone and the temperature of another. The problem here is more temperature than color, as you have the cold white and gray against the warm, earthy, sandy floor tile. The textures clash, as well (highly polished against what looks like a honed finish). If you pick a warm wall paint in the tan-gray range, which has undertones of bluish-gray and pink, you can bring down the blue undertones of the white and gray tiles, while cooling down the warm travertine. Look up Farrow and Ball’s ”Elephant’s Breath” paint color for an example. Use a low-sheen finish. I would go with white towels — perhaps with gray piping, or ”hotel” style with a gray embroidery line — and a white rug.

Thank you so much for everyone’s helpful and amazing inputs! I didn’t realize there‘s so much we can do to salvage what’s already done. I think we will start with a rug runner and look into paining the walls first.

The walls are fine as they are, unless you want to do a white with some blue or another color. Just don't add any more gray.
