I meant to say 10" high cabinet on top after lowering the wall cabinets

I do not understand you. Can you post a photo? Perhaps that will make things more clear.

Is the change you want primarily for enabling you to more easily to reach the cabinet storage or for visual appearance?

Would adding a lower open shelf beneath the cabinets meet your needs?

    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2482533/open-shelves-under-an-upper-cabinet

IF you move the cabinets themselves physically lower to be closer to the countertop, would that make them a head bumper for you and/or block your visual of what you're working with on the countertop ?

Do you want/need a 10 " space atop the cabinets for visual or storage purposes?

Is what you actually want 10" open space above your cabinets?

Do you want to ADD another 10" cabinet with a door? Specifically at the top?

Could that 10" cabinet be added at the bottom to a bottom shelf for storage you could easier reach or do you need a taller bottom shelf space?

Could the framing be added at the bottom and the existing door lowered and a short door added to the top? even if that means adding a shelf at the 10" level? or would you want a top hinged lift up door added to the top 10"?

@suezbell - the OP said 10” depth in her subject title, then 10“ high cabinets in her OP, then “10” high on top” in her 2nd post. I thought maybe she meant a second stack of cabinets to the ceiling, and that second stack would be 10” tall cabinets. But that doesn’t make sense since it doesn’t solve her problem of cabinets being ”way too high”. And 10” cabinets would be little tiny cubbyholes—if they are even made. So I cannot tell what she is getting at.

@Barbara Burris - please provide these measurements:

    - kitchen ceiling height

    - distance from the countertop to the bottom of the upper cabinets

    - how tall are the upper cabinets you have now? 36” tall, 42” tall, or something else?

M Miller It does seem unclear.

It would make certainly make sense to want all the cabinets the same depth UNLESS she is wanting to add a shallower (more back out of the way) shelf beneath the existing cabinets.

Wanting to lower the cabinets she has 10" only works if the bottom of the existing cabinets are 10" too high.

Barbara: If you lowered the cabinets you have ten inches, creating a ten inch space between the top of them and the ceiling, would that make the bottom of the cabinets you have too low?

How tall are the cabinets themselves?

Did the cabinet maker/installer make shorter standard cabinets and just hang them too high, perhaps because you said you wanted the cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling?

How high is the space between your countertop and the bottom of your overhead cabinet?
