DIY Wood Accent Wall

I finally found a design of a geometric wood accent wall I wanted to do in my dining room. (It is the first wall you see as you walk into my home.) I was all ready to start measuring and mocking it up when I noticed there is a big ugly vent at the top. How would you go about creating this wall with a vent? Here is a picture of the wall I want to create and a picture of my wall.

Perhaps handle it like they handled the outlets. Let's Assume you use 1 x 1 wood strips...frame the vent out with the same 1 x 1 with a mitered box, then end your diagonal strips into the vent, picking them up again on the other side to complete the pattern. Paint the vent the same color as the rest of the wall, of course.
