When this Phal made its first spike in winter/spring, my shelf of Phals was like a sailboat marina with its forest of masts, and I accidentally broke the spike off this plant when trying to pick up another plant [great anguish]. I cut the stump off and considered it lesson learned. However this plant apparently needed to fulfill a biological imperative and put out a second spike with 7 buds. I didn't know Phals would do that. The flowers range from 4 to 4 1/2 inches across. What a thrill!
