Please help with my living room. I need to create an style balance

last modified: 3 years ago

Hello,

I am looking to redesign my living room. I need a new rug, pillows for the couch, and an upholstered bench as a coffee table or a larger rectangular ottoman. I own different pieces in my living room with different styles, so I want to create a balance with my new pieces. I have a grey velvet couch, a wood tv armoire with doors, and a contemporary black bonded leather armless chair. So, I have this mix of contemporary and traditional styles. I am looking for advice for buying my new items that create a balance in style with a cozy and elegant look. I have no idea with color will look good, pattern, etc . Any advice on anything is much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Love the chair and your colors. I hate to say it, but I find the charming armoire rather overwhelming in this narrow room. And not necessary with the built-ins. I'm guessing it contains a TV? Could you use it in another room?

My thought as well regarding the very pretty armoire. is it essential for storage or can you wall mount the tv and use a more streamlined storage piece?

What's at the opposite end from the window? Is there a place where the armoire could be a focal point but not doubled by the mirrored wall? Have you considered removing the mirror?

Thank you very much for your comments. Unfortunately, I can not remove the mirror. This is a rental property and that is not an option. The armoire contains the TV. I can't change it because is a sentimental piece for my partner. On the opposite side of the window, there is a small desk. I am kind of stock with that I have here. That is why I need your creative minds, please. My only option is to play with what I already have in the room and just add some layers such as rugs, colors, coffee, table or ottoman. etc.

Your eclectic pieces can work well together, but you said the magic word, "balance." That's why we need to see the entire space. The mirror can impede achieving balance, but can be worked with. Sounds like a "small desK' is not a sufficient piece for a large wall, but you haven't shown us all four walls yet. You might be surprised at the solutions creative minds can come up with if we have all the information, including measurements and views of the items you have to work with. Those help with sizing a rug and the piece you want to put with the sofa.

Thank you. This is the 4th wall that ends at to the apartment exit.

The built-in cabinetry is a nice feature. Is it an optical illusion, or is the one by the window painted white inside? Does anyone ever sit in the armless chair? How wide is the room at its widest point and how wide is your sofa? That foyer looks to be larger than the size of your table and mirror would indicate. Since the shoes look in disarray, maybe that would be the spot for a storage ottoman. Does someone work from home or is the desk just a spot for playing on the computer and paying bills?

I think the armoire is fine as is. if you add an area rug it might make the room look heavier. were it me i would look for two small square glass and brass or some warm metal cocktail tables.

i think it’s really nice that you appreciate the importance of the sentiment in the armoire. i have a secretary desk from my parents that i have always managed to find a spot for in 3 different homes. i hope when i go one of my kids take it over.

Hope this layout helps you with suggestions for my decor.

    Answering your questions:

    - We do use the armless leather chair for guest

    - We use the desk to work from home

    - We do not have a dinner table, so the desk function as a dining table too. The ottoman or upholstered bench will work well as a coffee table and extra seat for a dinner of 3 or 4. Because the apt is small, I am looking to have functional, and multipurpose furnitures.

    - This is a small apartment rental, so there are things that we can not change.

    - All built-in are color grey as the walls. There is a silver metallic layer inside the built-in that brings in more light in the mornings.

    - I am looking to add a rug, new pillows for the couch, new curtains, and an upholstered bench ( or something similar) that work as a coffee table and extra seats for dining time.

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me with your creativity.

Thanks for the drawing and extra pix; that's helpful. Are you amenable to getting some of the furniture off the walls? I know the build-ins limit you, but having everything lined up on the walls tends to make the room look more like a waiting room. Can you mark where the electrical outlets are in the room. Is there WIFI for TV/computer or are you tethered to certain locations? I'll get back to you tomorrow with some ideas.

    Orange triangles mean electric outlets

Yes, I am willing to move the furniture off the walls. However, the wall behind the armoire, where the TV and Wifi are connected, is where all the installation is coming out from. The Wifi cable is at that wall.

Thank you again for helping me with this challenging decoration.

Thank you so much! Your help is beyond expectation. I love your suggested shoes storage and mirror for the foyer. The color is perfect.

I also want to continue with blue as an accent color. Orange feels too drastic for my style. What about some nude, grey or blue shade, or white contrast? What do you think about adding a big piece of art or a big plant on top of the AC under the window? I want to bring some life to that wall.

    Thank you very much!

Is this better? How are those sheer curtains mounted? Can you get a close up? I suggest you buy an art easel that you can move wherever you want it.

Here's blue and silver in a more contemporary feel. Lots of sizes on this one. I think you'll want to stick to a longer one that is narrow enough not to bump into the armoire.

Or more geometric. Again lots of sizes.
