“The San Antonio Zoo’s white-cheeked gibbons, Francois langur, African lions and Sumatran tigers will be among the first to receive an animal-specific COVID-19 va*****.

“We are very excited to be one of the initial zoos in the country to obtain and administer the Zoetis va*****,” said Tim Morrow, president and CEO of the zoo. “The safety of our animals, guests and zoo crew is our top priority.”

Created and donated by the animal health company Zoetis, the COVID-19 va***** that the zoo will receive in the coming weeks was made specifically for animals. Its experimental use is being authorized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Texas state veterinarian.

Dr. Rob Coke, the director of veterinary care at the San Antonio Zoo, said they’ll start with species that have been shown to contract COVID-19, which includes large cats and primates, but hope to continue v’ing other animals—including lesser apes, mongoose, monk, ferrets and otters—as availability and research progresses.

The animal va***** is similar to the human va***** but not identical. Animals will receive one injection and then a booster three weeks later.

Morrow said that the zoo’s veterinary and animal care staff have worked hard to prevent animals from getting COVID-19 by implementing increased disinfection procedures and wearing personal protective equipment. Providing animals with the va***** is the next step.

According to Zoetis, at least 75 percent of emerging infectious diseases have animal origin, and the va***** is part of understanding the connection between human and animal health.”
