We have blackbutt flooring and have purchased this tan leather sofa in the image below. Will that be too much brown? what colour rug can we put underneath to break up the browns and do any shades of grey go with tan?

These colors are very trendy right now, so you are off to a great start! Pale grey, such as the pillows on the sofa in your picture, would look good. Your rug could be almost any color that appeals to you. The biggest mistake people make is getting a rug that is too small; it should go under all four front feet of your sofa. I hope you will post more pictures as your room progresses.

Trying to pair gray with tan is tough. I wouldn’t try. Plus, gray is overdone and past its prime.

How about navy? Forest green? Burgandy? Cream?

    Lovely sofa.

Suggest a light, minimally designed rug to provide a calm contrast, let textured cushions add the warmth and accessorize with light and dark shades of grey and a bit of navy or black for a fresh, modern feel. FYI: Maison Simons has great pillows at very reasonable prices.

I'm a color person. I think a multicolor Moroccan rug would give the room some pop. Color and texture. eclectic.

New day and thinking how I posted leather pillows...could be on a chair... it was the neutrals that were in my mind.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone. We finally got our sofa delivered so I thought I would add photos of it in our space. Included in our lounge with some of the kitchen in the back ground so you can see the other colours in the room. Tan sofa, Blackbutt flooring, beige resin kitchen chairs teamed with concrete table with American oak legs and white kitchen.

We will have white sheer curtains on the windows as well which will soften the area. Just waiting on the curtains to be ready.

im reluctant to go “too light” with a rug because we have a young family not sure I can keep it clean.

let me know what you think guys. Light grey is growing on me but still unsure :)

Following. I love your couch. My camel colored couch was delivered yesterday and now lots of decisions to make. I’m far from good to offer advice, so I’ll read from afar and enjoy everyone’s comments. Good luck!

If you are planning to use a coffee table and you have children, I highly recommend using an ottoman style. There are many options, including ottomans that also have storage. This one doesn’t have storage, but just one example. Lots of options.

You really have a blank slate and I think the rug should only be selected after you define the feel you want in the entire space. Suggest looking at inspiration pictures. Choosing the right rug, as well as furniture and accessories will be much easier and you’ll end up with a well thought out room, meeting all your needs. Think big picture first.

I really like the earthy color combination below with your sectional.

Then concentrate on rug and accessorizing.
