Bathroom Vanity and Shower Separated by Pony Wall or Full Height Wall

Our 8’ x 8’ primary bathroom construction plans include a 60” vanity followed by a glass shower, 36” x 60”. The vanity and shower are separated by a wall. Should the wall be a pony wall or would it be more visually appealing to have the wall be full height?

I would choose the pony wall. I have a similar shower.

Are there 2 sinks in that vanity? It looks like it and if so, that will leave very little storage in the vanity. I don't see wall storage on the mirror wall, so you might consider that, as well as additional storage in a full-height wall shared with the shower.

The visual appeal of the shower also relies on 1) what tile you're using and how and 2) fixtures that are lovely to look at.

There is no question that the shower will get more light with just a pony wall, however, so bottom line, the answer is a bit more complicated than just the visual appeal.

Good for you to be asking these questions now, though!

If you do two sinks bring shower side wall out 24” and mount sconces on each side wall with bar above. Might get small low wall niches on each side for toothpaste and brushes. Every inch counts in this space.

A half wall between the vanity and the shower would help the room feel bigger overall and you could consider using two half walls to give the toilet a little more privacy.

Where will the showerhead and controls be? If the controls are on the side by the vanity, does that work with a pony wall?

Thanks so much Flo, Lyn, Elizabeth, hu and bpath… Fantastic commentary and suggestions. I’ll be incorporating the feedback. Attached are the finishes we’re considering. Penny tile - shower floor and shower niche, herringbone subway tile - shower walls, burnished bronze - fixtures, charcoal 12x 24 - floors. Is the herringbone tile and penny tile combo too busy?

I would definitely do a pony wall. If you want some extra storage , you could move the door over and put a 12" deep tall pantry behind it.

    Love those penny tiles!

Thanks Debbie! Good suggestion… There’s a room to move the door over a bit.

Robin- those are pretty choices. However, I will caution on using penny tiles for shower floor. The shear circular design causes wider grout spacing and unless you have a superior “tiler” it is extremely difficult to lay in these sheets and not create “grid” lines which makes for a unpleasant look. They could work on back only of niche. Think of them as jewelry and use carefully.

We have almost the exact same set-up. Our shower controls are in the pony wall. We open the door and can turn the water on without getting wet. We have 2 niches. One is in the pony wall and is wide enough to hold a lot of things. The other one is in the wall opposite the showerhead and it is taller with a shelf in it. Will your showerhead be on the same wall as your sinks? If so, you can put the tall niche on the left wall.

You can cut a half moon circle along the edge of any glass shower wall to access the handles so you don’t get wet.
I love your color combinations. I suggest taking Flo’s caution to heart about the penny tiles. If you have a very experienced tile installer, discuss the concerns with them before committing to the shower floor.

Cool idea RedRyder on half moon circle!

and for the penny tiles.. the easiest fix is for the installer to take them off the sheet. We had that done and they look awesome! Another option for you is Island Stone spindrift collection. I have them on my shower floor and I love love them. There is a beautiful blue called Midnight Matte. :)

I am in the process of adding another bath to our house for my youngest child and have this exact same set up, only smaller. The bathroom is 7 feet by 7 feet. I am debating between 1) a full wall or 2) a pony wall or 3) no wall and just a glass shower door between the vanity and the shower. What did you end up doing and are you happy?

Also, I am debating between a full wall and a pony wall between the shower and the toilet. What did you do?

    Can you share any photos?

    Thanks,

    Emily
