Curtains vs Roller Shades for sliders in a Modern ranch home?

last modified: 3 years ago

We were considering roller shades for our remodeled 1960s ranch-style home because we thought it was the best option for a crisp, clean look for our modern, neutral palate design. Now having second thoughts after seeing several modern homes with curtains instead of shades.

The main priority is on our three sliding glass doors—Family Room (131"), Kitchen (190") and Master Bedroom (98")—all of which open onto our central patio. The Kitchen slider is the one we use 90% of the time to go in or out (the other two sliders are open most of the day, but we rarely go through those doors).

I understand sliders are better served, functionally, by vertical blinds, panels, or products like Hunter Douglas Luminette, but we really don't like the look of vertical blinds, don't like the space panels use, and are not sure we want to spend the $$$$ for the Luminette, especially since we really don't like that look either. We had shutters in our last home and liked those, but not sure we want to make that investment since we're likely selling in the next year or two.

As you can see from photos below, we have no blank wall on either side of Kitchen slider, so most window treatments will block at least part of the window. The Family Room slider has blank wall, unfortunately on the same side as the door handle. The Master Bedroom slider has plenty of open wall space (36" or more) on both sides of its slider.

Trying to decide between these options:

A) Curtains on all.

B) Curtains on Family Room and Master, but outdoor motorized roller shade for the Kitchen sliders.

C) Roller shades on all sliders and just accept it'll require an extra step of rolling up shade before going in or out.

D) Or...?

Since we expect to be on our patio often (once our son cleans up his messy horticulture experiments, that is!), it's important to have some continuity of materials/color so we're not looking at different material on each window when we're outside looking in.

FWIW, privacy isn't the issue. I's the summer sun that's forcing us to break down and cover these windows. Master Bedroom gets morning sun (no biggie). Kitchen gets mid-day and afternoon sun. Family Room gets late afternoon (harsh).

Family room slider (looking across patio—and the remnants of son's Plant Science zone—toward Master Bedroom slider):

We have roller shades on our sliding glass door.

Typically we use shades for privacy/light and drapes/curtains for interest/decor. Of course some curtains can serve both functions. Bottom line is you don't have to do one or the other. We will be doing shades on most windows in our new build, with curtains as well when we want some style.

Roller shades would be my choice. I have vertical blinds on my 24 foot window, but underneath I have roller blinds to help insulate against the cold but also to provide shade when the setting sun gets in our eyes. The vertical blinds wouldn't have been my choice, but they are acceptable because they have vertical lines spaced so that when they are closed they don't look so flat as most do.

@Yvonne Martin, 24 foot window? Wowza! That is a lot of blinds!

Yes, 24 feet so I keep hoping that the vertical blinds last until they cart me off to senior living!

WOW Great spaces. Really liking all that natural light.

While I may well be in the minority, I'd like to suggest you at least consider vertical blinds. Before downsizing, I had them in the living/entry space, the den and the dining room. Would definitely use them again if I ever again have an other sliding glass patio door.

They come in vinyl, wood, faux wood and fabric . I'd personally recommend the vinyl and using all one neutral color -- white or beige. Vertical blinds make it a lot easier to use the doors as doors and open and close them for that purpose -- or you can quickly just push them aside in an emergency. They're great for light control because in addition to open or closed -- pulled over the door and completely shut or pulled all the way to the side and fully opened -- when pulled over the door, the slates can be straight -- fully open -- or you can choose partially open with the tilt of the slats in either direction ... you gauge how much of a tilt and in what direction based upon sunlight available (and from what direction) and how much of it you do or do not want to let fully into the room.

I had vertical blinds on my slider for years was so glad when we replaced the door. Solar roller shades with the nice wood valance to hide the roller
