Bought a rug but it mismatches with my entire home color scheme

last modified: 4 years ago

I bought a rug because it was a great deal for the price but everything in the main living areas of my house are matchy-matchy (greys, black, white color scheme) and the rug is very patterned with subtle pops of color. How would you fix the problem? Should I get rid of the rug or redesign my living room?

Pull sofa upon rug about 6 feet. Then put toys and other miscellaneous items behind sofa. Then get a storage coffee table for in front of the sofa. You also might be better off rearranging the room. Post room measurements and where openings, doors and windows are.

It will be better if you change the rug because redesigning the room will cost a lot and the rug will not be so costly.

I don't see a design other than the couch , tv, and coat rack. There is no bargain in the rug, there are LOTS of rugs. Show the adjacent spaces. " The main living spaces you referred to.

It’s not worth it to try to “make a rug work”. @Jan Moyer made the best comment - there are lots of rugs. Roll this one up and take a photo of the space. You’ll get help finding another rug. Tell us the size and your budget. OR, let @Flo Mangan do a room makeover with this one.

The rug is neutral enough to go with the colors you mentioned. I’d suggest two changes though. Without seeing the whole space, I‘d recommend moving couch to under window so it sits on the long side of rug, which is important and will also help with balancing room. Place tv opposite and on far wall, you could add storage for toys.

Accessorizing with like colors will help incorporate the rug and pull the room together.

If you like the color scheme of the room, then get another rug, one that is plainer. If you want to design your room around the rug, then you'll need more/different furniture.

I would get a thicker one too as I see you must have a baby?

I never saw your comment how come??????

The rug cost me $37 which is why it really was a steal for a rug that covers most of my living area. I'm looking for a 7×10 or 8×12 rug under $100. I've already shopped around online with no luck except if I wanted to buy a used one and I don't know how I feel about used rugs.

I think I will rearrange living room by putting sofa under window and TV opposite from it. I also will replace current throw pillows with red and blue pillows to match the rug. Also thinking of taking down the painting as it doesn't quite match the rug.

The rug is also machine washable and water absorbent which makes it easy because I do have a small child and a dog. It's not thick but my child is walking and does fine with the vinyl floors alone.

Machine washable? Not that size surely?

It can be folded but probably in one of those large machines at the laundromat.

The chandelier picture and the tribal rug don't work together, but the rug does work with the sofa. However, the sofa should sit 1/3-1/2 on the longer side of the rug so some rug extends past the two ends of the sofa. How could you arrange to accomplish that?

    $37??

I will most likely move the couch under the window and place the TV stand opposite if I keep the rug. If I replace with a plainer rug I will keep the chandelier picture. My biggest dilemma is to get rid of the rug and as many others mentioned there are a lot of rugs out there.

Yes $37 in an auction from a liquidation warehouse!

Sure would help if you posted room measurements. Can’t help much without key information.

@Flo Mangan My living room is 12' W × 15' L. That is just the living room area but it connects into the dining room.

    Ok that helps a little.

The rug colours look fine with your existing furniture, because your furniture is neutral.

Here is potential layout. Not sure what’s on long walls and I estimated rug is 9 x 12.

I put sofa on long wall. Two cozy chairs facing each other and console for TV across from sofa. A tall green plant in one corner and nice end table for a lamp. A small table beside other chair to set a coffee and/or a book. There is room for a ottoman or coffee table. I didn’t put that into drawing because there are so many possibilities.

This also provides transportation from family room thru dining area into kitchen.

Rug, curtains, a pillow of yours have geometric shapes in hollow "outlines" - use the colors in art over sofa, pillows.

Say you keep the chandelier piece at another spot - maybe a similarly 'lined' piece would make it fit better -

Are you keeping the rug? All you need to do is add one pillow on the sofa -

in a color from the rug.

A storage ottoman would be good. An ottoman style for coffee table is really the best option with children - no hard and/or sharp surfaces.

Ottoman pictured below does not have storage - but just to show another ottoman look.

@freedomplace1 Yes I am keeping the rug. I already am thinking of buying throw pillows in that light red and blue to match rug. I like your storage ottoman idea! Thanks!

    Talissa. you’re welcome. :)

I love the rug!!!Total score. You don’t need to do very much to make it work I think it looks fine as somebody pointed out, with your fairly neutral furniture and it’s even in the same colour way. Just bring a bit of the pops of colour from the rug up into the rest of the room with accessories like people have been suggesting. Congratulations on your new rug!

I definitely like the furniture arrangement that Flo suggested to tie the two areas together. The rug works better when the sofa is on the long side with the feet of the sofa on the rug.

You could do a storage ottoman if you like as an option. Or get baskets that fit on bottom shelf of coffee table for toy storage/clean up.

The reason the sofa has to be on long wall is because it provides more open set up. It is easy to change your cable location. So, up to you but just wanted to make sure you understood the logic. Your son is adorable!!

You can even buy a 25’ cable cord and use baseboard wire management to keep out of view. Here are examples. It’s not very expensive at all.

@Flo Mangan As much as I'd love to open up the space I don't want to risk my son knocking over my TV and I kind of like the separation of the dining room from the living room.

Top cage my 2 parakeets. Bottom cage is my dog's crate but he doesn't go in there unless we leave the house
