Should I or shouldn’t I? Sofa but no house.

last modified: 4 years ago

This is killing me lol. I have had this dream in my head for a while about a British race car green leather chesterfield sofa. Although incomplete my vision is sort of an old palm beach look involving cane or burl and a contemporary lean of chinoiserie. No blue, I want greens, corals, light walls, bamboo, cane and some painted or black.

I’m still sorting it out in my head.

Anyway, when researching leather chesterfields I became very discouraged at the prices for a quality sofa and thought the chances of me finding a nice used “green quality Chester almost impossible.

Fast forward and I found a beautiful used green lexington chester in great condition for a great price.

I could fit it in my a/c storage rental.

But, here’s the thing…I have no house yet. Due to the fact that I want to be in town in the area I’m seeking I’m probably looking at about 1,600 to 1,700 sf. living area total.

I know I shouldn’t but I really want to buy it.

Am I just being stupid?

It’s almost exactly “like” the one below in color and style.

I will have to furnish the new place as I sold most all furniture to the buyers of my old home. I need deals.

What to do?

Edited to add size. The sofa is 8’10”L according to the owner and my favorite height of 32” & 42”d.

Sue, wow! Are you the one who educated him to check the value?

    terrilynn,

Yes I did. I knew it was a Paul McCobb, but I didn't know how much it was worth.

I just don’t know why some posts are just now showing up. I would have missed them completley if not for Houzz notifications showing up in my mail feed this evening.

Jojo, Hollywood Regency is very close, I just have to fiqure out how to make it slightly more relaxed with touches of cane or burl and such.

I like the cane chairs but wow on the chesterfield

Of course you should go get that sofa. Before it's too late!

The sofa is still available! I got in touch today and apologized for not getting back as my husband was not on board. She said to tell him she will take $200 off as she just had new floors put in and the furniture doesn’t go with. Husband is warming up to the idea.

The lady who is selling the first two chairs I posted above emailed me and dropped the price to $250 for both chairs. She also had new floors put in. I saw them while there.

I think this new floor fad is going to work out great for me as it limits decor styles.

A bunch of homes in the area I am seeking to buy has recent ”updates” of these floors. They can look very nice but just not my style. Some people think if they just put it somewhere, anywhere, they will be able to hang with the cool kids.

This is one of many real life examples of the horrors.

It doesn’t cost much to be cool when doing laminate and apparently allows one to ad an additional $100,000 to $150,000 on to the asking price. Grrr, is it wrong to feel like punching them in the face? I actually have no big problem with laminte in general, but come on…

BTW, please put me in the enabler category.

When I was in the market for my forever house, I took my measuring tape with me. Being able to accommodate my furniture was a must. I'm very happy with the house I found. It doesn't matter if it;s furniture you've loved forever or for 5 minutes; your vision will make your move so satisfying and worthwhile.

    I would realllllly lowwwwwwball it.

It is just what you want, but I think it could be a white elephant in your local market.

As you know, it is not a standard color; happens to be one you love but it is def less salable than a traditional color.

Moreover, it is so not the local vernacular and so it will not go in most "updated" Florida houses.

Here's where marching to your own beat will save you money.

Mtn - I chuckled when you suggest lowball. I just did that with a Chanel skirt that has been listed on ebay at the wrong price for a year and a half. Seller responded ”Is that a joke?”, to which this reaponse fell of of me….oops!😂

Mtn, no worries about a low ball offer. My husband is great at that. I'm not as good there but am exceptional in squeezing extra drops of blood out when selling. We make a good team.

@just_terrilynn weren't you going to look at the sofa this weekend? Update?

Tina, my husband wasn’t onboard with the idea but the price is getting lower so he’s warming up. It’s not an ”in” shade so I might have a bit more time. If not this green chester, I will have a green chester. Unfortunately the sofa is more like an hour 20 min to an hour and a half away so not easy to sell husband on the looky.

In the meantime I will continue to look for chairs and cocktail tables. Chairs first, then table. I will most likely have to spring for a new coffee table as the waterfall / scroll vintage ones I like are well over 2 grand. Depending on the chairs… this new Robb & Stucky table could be a contender. Pretend there is no blue in the mock-up.

My husband is always having issues seeing MY vision. ☺ It's a lovely Chesterfield....GO FOR IT! I always ask, "Can you go any lower?"

Thank you all! I am very happy. It was a drive but we made a mini vacation day of it with a nice lunch and drive along the beach. The couple we bought from had also changed their floors to that popular gray/brown wood and had to change out all their furniture because it didn’t look right with the floors. I’m going to make out like a bandit over this new floor fad.

I kept checking back to this thread to find out if you got your dream sofa - and you did. It's beautiful and look like it's in really great shape. Good for you! But now I'm curious - it looks heavy, did you have help loading it into your vehicle? I may have missed this but do you have an empty garage where you're storing all your treasure?

The couple we bought it from helped us put it in the van. The trick came when we had to get it into the a/c storage locker but we did it. I don’t think my finger is broken , I can move it a little and the swelling has already gone down a bit.😆

The sofa is in great shape and only three years old and not much use.

Your husband will be even happier when you move into your new house and remind him what a new one would cost. Good job!

Oh so excited for you! Hopefully by the time you find a house you'll be good to go and just add the finishing touches.

Hard to go wrong for 800. Now hire an architect to build a house for it. : )

Fantastic bargain and a very nice sofa. And, it quantifies the size of your main living area so your house search will be more specific.

Yay terrilynn! Beautiful sofa and quite a bargain. Happy for you.

    Thank you!

The sofa is a few inches shorter than advertised, that's even better!

While I may have to sacrifice some total square footage to be in the area I want, I would rather go without a third or more bedrooms than settle for a tiny living room. So, hopefully I am safe with my sofa size. I am hoping to find at least one really nice high quality chair and I really want a waterfall or scroll rectangular coffee table. After I find those I will cool it on the buying until the house is found. My a/c storage locker will hold no more after that anyway...

Well, maybe I'm a liar lol. I like these lamps w/tabletop.

    Description:

Pair of modern 1970s brass, glass and lucite floor lamps with round table tops. The glass table tops are 18 inches in diameter. Lamp height from floor to finial is 57 inches. The body of the lamp 46 inches tall. The base is approximately 11 inches wide.

They are mostly sort of unassuming but would I be painting myself into a corner with chair picks?

They say no one ever likes the decor they grew up with, so the 70s is still a hard pass for me. It has to skip a generation, which is why my DD bought these!

lol Mtn! I bet your daughter looks adorable!

    My thoughts exactly, Mtn!

But, Just-Terrilynn, those lamps could lean quite modern, especially with the right lampshades. (Just remove the plastic from the shades and don't wear a caftan near them a la Mrs. Roper.) I'll echo the congratulations on the sofa--it is a beautiful piece!

I was sort of thinking of an off white drum shade for these but in the back of my mind a little voice was saying...you are painting yourself into a corner with finding quality used chairs, less choices.

Otherwise, I think they could work with a sort of eclectic look with chairs that had a mcm shape. However, I have to keep my options open.

    Thanks for talking me down.

Well, the good thing about those lamps, if you're concerned about all your furniture fitting into a new, smaller space, is that they don't require much room and you get a table with lamp.

    last modified: 4 years ago

That's what I was thinking as well Oly.

I really need to find a chair or chairs first though as that will better dictate my direction. I want something nice.

I don't like the glass and brass with your chesterfield; too cold.

    last modified: 4 years ago

The room will be far from cold Mtn, regardless of lamp/table picks. I'm not buying this now but I'm thinking a rug sort of like the one below. This might work nicely for my coral and green idea but I’d like to find something like this that is a bit more muted or slightly darker.. Keep in mind the walls will be a very very light band aid color.

And just to further freak you out I'm thinking Hendrix cut velvet fabric on a side chair seat.

Congrats on the purchase! It looks like such a great piece!

I love wingbacks, I own 3!...but unless you get that red rug?....the chair "fabric" is not as cool as the Hendrix velvet cut fabric. That is major COOL! ☺ Hold out...

Teri - the fabric is poorly laid out and not matched which leads me to think they are poor quality chairs. Too bad, because thats a killer print

Spanish, the legs had me wondering about the quality but it's hard to tell. They are asking $800 or best offer for the pair. I would pay $600 for the pair if a good resalable (just in case) brand.

I do like wingback a lot but think if I only have the one room to lounge and watch TV, maybe I should think more cool but also practical.

Nicole, I love that fabric above! It's pricey but I could spring for a side chair seat. Unfortunately the upholsterer I used for years has long retired, most around here charge double what he did. That man did amazing work as well. Not to say full upholstery is totally out but I would need the deal of the century on a high quality chair or chairs.

To all, thank you for allowing me to spring board off you!!!

    Edited:

See this wall color? Not the rest but just that color. That is “one” of the main tones I want in a rug. I do not like rugs with borders much unless it’s tone on tone. We will not be buying the rug now but I’m lining things up in my head as I will most likely be doing a full gut and have a thousand other decisions to make. I would like this rug to be able to handle an eclectic contemporary take. But, where is it?

I have four 12 X 12 stick paint samples coming but for some reason didn't save all the colors. I like this but lighter, want very light walls.

Things were so much easier before I learned to look at details like this!
