Lots of options depending on your style! I’m also not a fan of the stainless hood - especially with cabinets on either side. Here is mine but there are so many ways of doing this depending on your style.

Stainless isn't the only metal for hoods! In my previous house I had a custom hood made by Modern-aire and it was done in rustic brass. They offered a wide variety of metals in different patinas.

We did the simple drywall box frame. Love it. Got the hood “insert” for it.

Stainless is the most budget choice, which is why its most often done. Start at 5x the cost of stainless, and go way up from there, for any other choice.

^^^ stainless is often used because it's an appropriate material to capture effluent, it's not flammable, it's easy to clean and it also often matched the appliance below it.

Would it be weird to tile our range hood?

I went to boarding school and believe me, it didn't look anything like that kitchen! Verbo, you come up with some unique opinions!

You can certainly tile your range hood, but I would consult with a designer to get the details right and hire the best tile guy/gal in your area.

This tile design was planned carefully and done by a skilled tiler.
