Help with colors & furniture plcement for mom's light blue living room

last modified: 3 years ago

Hello,

My mom has always wanted a "light blue living room as long as I can remember. The pandemic has altered her life tememdously. I am on a mission to create this room for her to bring her some happiness . I'm so grateful for her sacrifices and just being a wonderful mother to me and my sisters.

I started back in February painting the walls, installing shutters and a new light fixture. I've aquired the furniture throughout the year. She loves Mid - Century and Glam but not too extreme. In addition to the furniture shown in the photos, I just ordered two white velvet swoop arm chairs to go across from the sofa. They are small in dimension and should work well with the sofa. Also, I'm having white bookshelves built with the blue walls exposed . I'm planning on going the full width of the wall that you see with entry doorway. They will also be built above the doorway so they're connected and span the entire end of the room.

I need to bring in some more color to warm it up a bit.

What other colors can I incorporate with this room? Mostly in wall decor, pillows, throws, etc. You'll notice I've picked up a few decor pieces in Teal and also some purple flowers on the table. Just not sure how to go?

Wall art above the sofa and long wall of dining table ?

Also, I need a console or cabinet or chest or something to go between the two front windows?

And maybe the furniture placed differently and bookshelves built into another wall ? IDK

Ive never done this before and my mind just starts spinning becasuse of different ideas. You'll notice the Espresso end tables which I guess don't go very well with the other pieces. Ha ha I was trying to bring in a little Traditional but maybe should have done something else. My mom likes them though. I just want this to be something she's really proud of when I hopefully am finshed by Christmas.

Thank so much to anyone who has some ideas or advice. This has been quite a learning experience but one out of love !

I would start by taking her shopping for some art she loves and it does not need to "go with" anything only what she loves. I would rethink a wall of book shelves unless she has really wonderful items to display since IMO they usually just collect a bunch of stuff to add to eye clutter No fake flowers anywhere so if she is into buying real all the time I would leave the flowers out of the equation. I aslo would not have espresso anything in that space . BTW no more blue either except for some pale blue faux silk drapes on all the windows for sure . BTW those espresso tables are a far cry from traditional. Is the hall ad ifferent color ? IMO a huge piece of art there with maybe a bench under it would be fabulous in a glam space

I like what you've done so far. It's really overwhelming to start with a completely blank space. Green, yellow, purple or pink could work for accessories. Accessories should speak to the homeowner. I agree with Patricia that it is time to get some art as that can lead you to colors for throw pillows, etc. Just make sure it is the right scale for the wall area. Sometimes having pairs or even four smaller pieces is the right way to go. Maybe one section of wall could be a gallery of family pictures?

I what a sweet and caring gesture for your Mom. I like what you've done so far too and think getting your Mom involved with shopping for art and pillows would help with finishing touches and completing the room.

What a dignified, restful house, lovely and ready for as has been said- her style and colors.

I agree about less of shelving/ cases - and over the door [with 8' ceilings] they'll appear to 'tower' over... oh no...

did you say no tv ..? electric fireplace nice.

Does she have valued items... anything for her to enjoy seeing around. Or from younger life: nostalgic of where she lived, enjoyed going, lakes...mountains...travels?

Possibly with an interesting neutral setting you've made - could have a plant table between windows, with sturdy place for a "cousin collection" for flowers to care for...I mean variety of pot colors.

Large 7 x 5" Never guess when your violet needs water; it’s absorbed in the unglazed lower half of the top pot. Fill the bottom pot with water every 2-3 weeks [brown with white drips and black specks]. 4- 5” planting area for a standard violet.

The opening to the hall forms a framing view - and it's centered, and on a plain wall. One accent wall in the hall - consider wallpaper, paint, or stencil. Console or bench doesn't have to go there.

Bookcases must be filled with books and maybe with decor. Does your mom have enough books and large decor items? They can be pretty busy and colorful when full of books. Remember that you'll want to provide a visual counter balance to it at the opposite end of the room. Perhaps a buffet with large art above it will suffice. You're doing a nice job. Does your mom like fuschia? Pops with lumbar pillows in the dining chairs and on the seating pieces might look pretty.

In hall, mural not necessarily tacky or cheap. I noticed the green in the blue bowl on coffee table:

How wonderful for your mom! i think you have a very good start! i like your idea of the wall of bookcases, but perhaps not over the doorway as that seems too heavy for the scale of the sofa and other furniture. To warm up the light cool blue walls, white woodwork and furniture and glass table and lamps, you need to go with blues compliment color, orange or tones of orange like caramel, or gold. The wood floors are the starting point. You can also use texture to warm up smooth hard or shiny glam surfaces. Perhaps a fur throw, or large wood tray. You could add a big plant to add some life to the cool blue. I like the idea of adding a fireplace for real temperature warmth too! Have fun with colorful art and textured pillows. Keep going, you are amazing and so this room will be too!

How nice of you to want to do up your mother's room!

You need a third color besides the light blue and royal blue, and you can do the 60-30-10 rule with 60% your light blue, 30% your royal blue and 10% the third color.

What you need to decide is what that color will be, and either you can decide that, or your mother can.

And you can decide that based on color preferences and then purchase art and accessories based on that, or you can just wing it and pick some art and accessories you like and work around that.

To be more specific, do you want to add a green or purple?

And what type of a green or purple, there are so many!

Green and purple are next to blue on the color wheel, so they will be calming.

Or, if you want excitement and pizzazz you can add to your blues some oranges or yellows, and you can make it less primary school and more sophisticated if you use ochre or saffron or pumpkin or carnelian.

Why don't you look up how to use a color wheel for decorating?

I strongly suggest that you let your mom pick out the art for the walls?

She is the one that will be staring at it.

I also suggest a knock-out mirror somewhere, either a Venetian glass mirror, or a starburst mirror, or an antique mirror that you find in a consignment shop.

If you get a Venetian glass mirror (those look divine on a light blue wall!) have it hung by someone who really knows what they are doing, because those mirrors are very heavy!

I would also suggest throw pillows that unite the colors that you have chosen for the room in a very clever way and that are textural, for example, a velveteen or synthetic velvet that wears well, a nubby knit, etc.

I would have chosen an Oriental rug rather than the solid blue.

If it is not too late, can you move the solid blue rug into the bedroom?

Something like this would look marvelous in the living room, and be so interesting.

Thank y'all so much for the suggestions ! I LOVE the idea of a plug in fireplace. That will really look nice I think. I was mainly doing the bookshelves becasue she always said she wanted built in bookcases. Ha ha.. And I wil plan to do a sideboard or something on the wall behind the table. And I'll replace the espresso end tables with something white or a metal with a glass top. I was actually looking at the lemon ball topiarys , which would look nice on the fireplace. I will check out the color wheel suggestion. I'm thinking lilac or darker purple. Also would like to introduce some gold/ yellows somewhere to warm it up a bit ..maybe in frames for artwork or decorative objects ? Thanks again for taking time to respond ! Definitely have received some inspiration from all the advice !

If you are set on a fireplace, you would be better off with a gel fuel fireplace.

The fireplaces are freestanding, do not need mounting to a wall and do not need a chimney, a gas hook-up or venting, and do not need electricity.

They are approved by the most finicky of condominium and co-op boards too. (Of course, like anything else that burns, even a candle, do not leave it unattended, or go to sleep with it still burning.)

    You get fake heatproof logs.

The fireplace and mantel come in any style and size you like.

The fuel makes very real, significant flames, and if you get the right kind of fuel cans it even makes nice popping noises too.

New day seeing mirrored dining table/ light -- It's a dressy vibe along with monochromatic all blue -- books in a closed case? even combined with a fake fp....

Question - do children and others gather here?

A nook somewhere for a bookcase or 2? with or without a window... some 'cool' ones have been built under/ around a staircase.

If older house, I like homey touches, not nec. lemon topiary. Adding warm colors sort of repeats 'warm wood' in the rest of the house - "please" no glass tops. ;)

Jan Moyer's photo of fp/Christmas items on mantel was nice for between your windows.

But the built-in could be great where sofa is -- with faux fp in middle.

What is chilling out the room are those stark white lampshades. Brrrrr.

Try a shade with a light gray over skirt like this one.

Bring the color of the rug up onto the sofa.

No more mirror; no more chrome; canvas art is a must. Canvas will bring in texture and warmth.

Notice your walls have a light purple undertone . Purple = warm

Yes, I plan to get new shades. Those were the shades that came with the lamps from Lamps Plus. Thank you for the suggestion of the grey. That will be perfect !

Well, she said NO to the plug in fireplace. She thinks they're "tacky" haha.
