Transitional Bedding - Want to help choose pre-winter Bedding?

I am mostly failing in my efforts to address some major stressors by way of self care-- and the result is that I am struggling to relax and fall asleep. I thought it would help to get fresh new bedding.

I bought new pillows a few months ago (I forget who recommended Warm Things-- but the pillows are just great! I will be ordering more). This is a tricky time of year because it is way too early for flannel ... and my summer florals don't seem "right" for the season. Ive had a hard time finding something I like but I am leaning towards the "Pure Leaf" duvet set.. and I thought I'd check here for some thoughts and recommendations on how to make it more interesting since there is so little color in the pattern. My walls are Gray Owl which leans a little blueish in my room but easily works with both blues and greens.

I have paired the set with two diff quilts below-- the first porcelain blue from pottery barn, the second is glacial ice from Annie Selke. Do you think they work? Do you prefer one over the other? What do you think about bringing in more pattern given the lack of color?

My other two options for the duvet..

    DKNY Refresh

I really like this Stencil Damask but not sure about it for fall.. I do find the pattern relaxing!

I am not usually drawn to striped or plaid bedding.. but i thought they might be a better to pair with the leaves pattern. i think I like the large buffalo plaid best.. but it is only available in shams, not sheets.

    thoughts and suggestions welcome!

    These are my choices:

I think if you use the leaves duvet, what you put with it should be more subdued.

But I really like the DKNY Refresh!

Thanks, Jinx.. yes, i was trying to stick with designs that wouldn't overshadow the leaf print. I tried some prints but they just didn't work.

I also like the DKNY-- in fact, I ordered the shams last week but they are stuck in shipping limbo. The overall ratings are high but there were a few negative reviews that made me want to check it out before ordering the whole set.

I too like the DKNY, but I am also a fan of PB for overall performance. Something about the DKNY makes me think i might tire of the overall pattern look after a while. I tend to go with (boring) solids and accent with a print throw at the bottom and maybe one or two pillows in a contrast color or print in front of shams.

As to what to pair with the PB porcelain blue, you could do pillows in the dark brown for autumn. I love it with white as shown, but you could do cream, fuschia, pale pink, green (lime or sage). Depending on your mood or the season, I see lots of possibilities for accent pillows.

I agree that I might tire of the DKNY pattern-- what isn't obvious in the photo is that the pattern is made from small thread fringes. One of the complaints is that they are itchy-- that's a deal breaker for me.

Only the quilt is PB.. the leaf duvet is from The Company Store. I actually prefer their bedding to PB except for quilts. I love PB quilts. I hadn't thought of using brown pillows-- but I use so many bed pillows that I won't be adding accent pillows. Maybe a lumbar pillow but really, the number of pillows are already OTT.

What might not be clear is that while the quilts are shown made up, I'd use the quilt folded at the bottom of the bed. I don't NEED a quilt but I thought the leaf pattern needed something *extra*.

I am open to other duvet designs-- I just want it to be a "quiet" color and design. Something to support and encourage relaxation and sleep.

Not sure what your room looks like, but if it were me, I would prefer a bit more color for the quilt/duvet at the end of the bed. I love changing my bedding up. We keep a cream colored dust ruffle and quilt (similar to the PB quilt.) on the bed and I have euro shams that match the quilt. I change up a duvet/coverlet (whatever) the goes on the bottom half of the bed. I will also change up the set of regular shams (that goes in front of euros) and I love to have a long pillow in front of the shams. Our house is mainly blues/greens (lighter shades). I feel our BR is very soothing, but cozy too as we have several pieces of dark wood and we have wood floors. A rug can help too. We don't actually use the top covers; we have a top sheet, a blanket and when needed we switch to flannel top sheet and a heavier blanket.

I just recently bought a set of custom made sage green/cream toile shams (never used). Now I need to find a duvet, something for the bottom of the bed.

    Your room will be gorgeous!

Thanks, Tina. I do wish the duvet had more color-- not a lot of color but a little bit of soft color.

I may set up my bedding differently than others. I use the duvet to cover the bed. The quilt would be at the bottom. I don't need the quilt for sleeping-- I added it to bring in some color to the leaf pattern.

I don't want a fussy bed-- i am an early riser and I love the ease of just fluffing the duvet to make the bed. I don't even use a top sheet because its too much to fiddle with.

I received the DKNY shams this morning-- finally!> I am going to pass on the duvet. I don't care for the weight or the pattern and the color is very pale. Much more pale than the image above.

I loathe the thought of restarting my search-- I have so many other things to do today-- but I guess it is becoming clear that I am not happy with the Leaf pattern. I shouldn't have to spend an extra $200-$300 just to bring in color.

Since last week, I have browsed the company store, pb, z gallerie, annie selke, ballard, crate and barrel, horchow/nm, nordstrom, garnet hill, cuddledown, belk.. and I am sure other stores I am not remembering. It shouldn't be this hard.. but a lot of what is out is flannel and well, I guess I am picky. I only want certain colors and certain vibes.

I did find this set this morning-- it's a little over budget for fewer pieces. I never pay over $200 for my duvet covers -- and I'd set a limit of $500 for duvet, shams and any additional items. This is closer to $600 for just the duvet and pillow cases. Shams add an additional $250. It is the vibe I want but I need to think about the additional cost. I do really like the look.. but not sure I can justify the expense given how frequently i change my bedding.

I was on a bedding hunt recently, and overall disappointed, too. I like your recent choice above, but it may not pair well with the PB porcelain blue quilt. I had that quilt (same color) at one point, and it was more blue than their website photo.

Thanks, Feathers ... it's good to know that I am not the only one who has struggled to find the right bedding.

If I purchase the above set, I won't add a quilt. The quilt is for appearance only and since the set above is already a few hundred over my intended budget, i won't add a quilt too.

At the moment, I am not ready to go over budget. As soon as it gets *really* cold ... I will switch to my flannel duvet. I just need something for a few months.. and really, all i need is just something new and calming to help create a more relaxing space.

I like your first two choices in the original post. Both are gorgeous and would look lovely together!! I think I am leaning more to the second option... as I love the the texture on the quilt.

I’m a forever fan of PB duvets, at least until they make the mistake of changing the cotton they use. It’s crisp, cool (in a good way) and when it’s stuffed with a down comforter they just feel cozy good. If you’re doing this as a therapy to help you sleep better, I‘d worry more about the fabric it’s made out of than the pattern it has. My sister generously surprised me with a bedding set that’s beautiful to look at, but I can’t use it because I can’t stand the feel of the fabric, which is disappointing.

On a side note, I really like the floral and buffalo you posted, they look really pretty together

I totally agree, Lukki.. and that is why I am returning the DKNY shams. The just didn't *feel* nice on the skin. I know I like the Company Store's sateen and also PB's organic cotton.

I promised myself I would order this weekend ... so I am going to complete one more weekend chore and then sit down and make a choice.

Thanks all for your input and suggestions

Okay, I have been reading this over and over and I seem to be terribly block-headed and confused. Are you saying you are getting the leaf-pattern duvet set AND a quilt? Or is one for the sheets and the other for a quilt or duvet? Anyway, I am sure it will be lovely and can't wait to see it with your bed all made up! Sorry to be so stupid.

    Sorry, didn't mean to confuse.

I will purchase a duvet-- this is my preference for making up my bed.

I am considering a quilt if I purchase the Leaf duvet.. just to bring in some color. I would keep it at the bottom of the bed. I won't use a quilt under the duvet.

I will also need sheets/pillow cases/shams - i would like to have a coordinating pattern to work with the leaf pattern shams.

I didn't try to cut in patterns for coordinating shams.. but this is how i'd use the quilt if i go there.

A great place to buy quilts like that (for the bottom of the bed) is Home Goods (or at least it used to be) .

Funky, I’m glad you agree, I felt like an old lady writing it.

Just wanted to circle back-- the bedding arrived early this morning and just in time as I had oral surgery today. I wanted new fluffy bedding to recover in.

Unfortunately, I accidentally (not sure HOW) purchased the comforter instead of the duvet cover. It was going to be bulky and a PIA to return so I just put it on the bed. I do wish it was a duvet but I couldn't deal with it this am.

The great new is I absolutely love the pattern-- it is so much prettier in person and it looks great with my grey owl walls (but most everything does).

I waited to order the quilt to be sure I liked the leaf pattern-- so now that I do like it, I should order a quilt. The green velvet one will work-- the blue will not. I am also considering a pattern-- i have a few days of recovery at home so plenty of time to look around.

Glad you like the pattern and hope you feel better soon!

Well, thank you, this thread reminded me that I needed winter bedding for our new bed in our cottage! We got a bigger bed (king, yay) over the summer but now only have a thin quilt and will need something for "off season." I just ordered a solid comforter from Garner Hill to throw over our quilt.

Thanks-- i am pleased with the pattern... and looking forward to ordering the quilt.

And glad to help, Sue :)

And thanks for the well wishes. I am recovering well .. and thank god for Ritas!
