Help with furniture layout, design and color of Living Room

Question

These are design dilemma and paint color questions.

#1

I want to update and add a modern classy touch to our new home. I was thinking of some black accent walls, but not sure where to do them. Also I want to update the fireplace/wall. It looks plain. Some pictures of areas I am considering. Entryway, living room wall, fireplace wall, office/playroom doors. Color idea: Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black or Onyx. Also Benjamin Moore Jet Black.

#2

Please offer furniture layout ideas for our corner fireplace living room. I don’t like the way it’s set up. Our couches are too big as a set and it’s not maximizing the space. I am open to buying a sectional and adding some mew chairs. I would like some separate seating areas, maybe a small bar area or desk. just want this large room to be multifunctional! Please advise your opinions and design suggestions with products/pics.

Layout comes before decor and paint. So:

--Everything seems crowded forward with too much space behind the short sofa: Instead: move your long sofa where the short one is, and move it back about two feet to create a long, fairly definined entryway. With your long sofa pushed back, then the your attractive floor lamp becomes part of the grouping--place to read, light window end of the room.

--Invest in a long, low console table/or cabinet and put the TV on it. Remove the shelf above the TV, which looks a odd. I'm not a fan of accent walls, but to camouflage a large TV screen, they're okay. You could do charcoal with a light wood console below or shelving. Paint TV surround same as accent wall only semi-gloss paint. Add a painting above the fireplace rather than the art piece you have, which can be part of a gallery wall arund the TV. If you want more to look at, hang art over the console for color.

--Art above fireplace in charcoals and gold/tan to echo your sofass:

--Add a much larger rug so both sofas sit on it entirely--this palette, not necessarily this rug.

--Paint the remaining walls ivory that harmonizes with your sofas.

--Add a nesting coffee table reachable from both sofas. This wood top echoes your kitchen cabinets so adds continuity to the space.

I would try to move sofa in front of the window to make space more open and inviting.

Thank you. Only concern is that the windows are on the same wall as the windows. The photos you sent it was the opposite.

Why is all the seating placed on top of the TV? Move everything back about 5 ft away from the TV so the seating is more centered in the room.

Here are some options for layouts.

Your lovely home seems transitional to me... and mantel...so I don't picture a dark accent wall/s.

A pro has drawn ideas, but I'll ask if placing a small table by the dark chair, and behind sofa would work, though a tiny space for it.... right now how many feet are behind the sofa? seems with chair there, sofa could be moved a foot back.

This is the space behind sofas. I think the sofas are too big for the room. The smaller one has a pull out bed, so I though it would make sense to move that one to the office/den. I have two of those grey chairs. But I am open to buying new furniture. A proper sectional that isn’t so bulky, but still pretty. I definitely want some stand out light fixtures. Ceiling height is 9 ft.
Main living area is roughly 17x17 not including the walkway from entry hallway.
12 ft from edge of fireplace to tile of kitchen.

I've never bought a sectional, etc... but half-joking I'll offer that: if it seems hard now to arrange furniture, wait til you have a large piece.

Indulge me? and place a chair/table sort of in corner [behind sofa]?

I skimmed posts - didn't read idea to place seating parallel to fp - and your 2 chairs at each side.... photo of?

Best basic foundation seating is a three seat sofa and two upholstered armchairs. You'll regret a sectional. Unless you can readily find seating on the floor at the furniture store, you may be in for a long wait. Why not move the sofa bed to the office and work with the bigger sofa and the black chair for now? If you can match the style of the black chair with a second one, a print fabric would be OK, and add some interest. You have too many wirey looking tables (foyer, under the man's portrait and where your sofas corner. ) Plan to replace those with more substantial pieces, and don't neglect to shop antique and second hand stores. I think your rug is a tad small. It should be no less than 2 feet wider than the sofa.

I love this living room. The deep reading chairs are gorgeous, but i cant find them in this color anywhere.

Oh to respond, the rug is 9x12. It hits the fireplace, feels big in the small area. But I see what you mean. I do agree with switching out some end tables.

Love the kenzo chair, but the color is still a bit emerald. The color I like is more of a muted green/blue.

If adding sheen with mercury lamp, new ceiling light... maybe a throw add to your browns, including floor and kitchen cabinets, hide rug....
